NEW ULM — New Ulm completed the last game of its regular season with a convincing 7-0 win over St. James/Windom/Madelia Saturday in a Big South Conference girls soccer game at New Ulm High School.

Jesaylin Skiglund and Kiyla Kolden led the attack for the Eagles with two goals each. Anna Kramer, Maggie Joyce and Kaelyn Eikanger had a goal apiece, while Kramer, Kolden and Piper Kapolczynski each had an assist, and Eikanger had two assists. Goalie Ariana Dreyer had six saves in the game.

The game started with a goal by Skoglund assisted by Kramer in the fourth minute, followed up by an unassisted goal by Skoglund in the eighth minute. Kolden got her first goal in the 15th minute, assisted by Eikanger, while Kramer scored her goal in the 18th minute. Kolden assisted Eikanger in the 30th minute before Kapolczynski assisted Joyce in the 34th minute to finish the second half up 6-0.

Kolden took a rebound from Eikanger and put it in the back of the net for the final score of the game early in the second half. Eikanger nearly had her second goal of the match midway through the period, but was called just offsides, eliminating the goal.

The Wings got some pressure late in the half, with Tora Hemmingsen putting three shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of the game, but Dreyer collected them all, completing the shut out for the Eagles.

With the the regular season in the books, New Ulm (6-7-3, 6-4-2) turns to the Section 2AA playoffs which start on Tuesday.

New Ulm head coach Jonathan Johnson said the offense the team put up Saturday is a good sign for things to come.

“We’ve been playing really hard and really good soccer,” Johnson said. “But we’ve been coming up short on the scoring end. That’s where we need to put our focus, is getting that ball up there and in the net. Our defense has been stellar all season, made some changes in midfield to control the midfield a little better, and hopefully improve our scoring opportunities.”
