DELANO — New Ulm Brewers right-hander Mitch Bockenstedt allowed just one hit through eight innings and the Brewers’ bats exploded for 12 hits as they blanked the Waterville Indians 5-0 Sunday afternoon in the Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

Bockenstedt allowed just one Waterville hit — a second inning leadoff infield single to Ben Boran — in earning the win. He struck out four and walked two.

Ethan Stade pitched the ninth for New Ulm.

Luke Sellner took the loss for Waterville. He went 6 2/3 innings and was charged with three runs.

Hunter Ranweiler led the Brewers’ attack with three hits and two RBIs.

Colton Schaefer, Zach Hoffmann and Trevor Nissen each added two hits. Both of Nissen’s hits were doubles. Hunter Ranweiler and Wade French also doubled.

New Ulm now plays Faribault next Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in Delano.

“He has been really strong for us all year,” Brewers manager Al Flor said of Bockenstedt. “We had Ethan [Stade] to back him up at the end — that worked out really well.”

The Brewers took a 1-0 lead over Waterville in the bottom of the first on singles from Schaefer, J.T. Hoffmann and Hunter Ranweiler to load the bases with no outs. Schaefer scored the first run of the game on a Cole Ranweiler sacrifice fly.

Bockenstedt said that getting that first run was big.

“I felt like it kind of helped set the tone — it let me relax a little bit,” he said. “And it is nice pitching with the lead. I was able to execute my pitches well today.

“My breaking ball was really sharp and I felt that that caught them off-balance a little bit.”

The Brewers threatened in the third, fourth and fifth innings before making it 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth when Wade French and Trevor Nissen belted back-to-back doubles and then ended Sellner’s day on the mound in the seventh.

Sellner issued a one-out walk to Hunter Ranweiler, who stole second.

He raced home on a Zach Hoffman single.

The runs given up by Sellner ended a string of 18 scoreless innings that he had coming into the state tournament.

While Sellner struggled, Bockenstedt was dominating Indians hitters.

“I felt like I was hitting my spots when I needed to,” he said. “I was inside-outside, up-down. I felt like I had command of the game pretty much all the way through.

“It is nice when you get that gap where you get a couple of extra runs — you can really relax and just worry about throwing strikes.”

The Brewers put a wrap on the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when they added two more runs after two were out.

Schaefer and Hoffmann both reached on free passes before Hunter Ranweiler doubled them both in.

Flor said that he was also pleased with the Brewers batting order.

Seven of the nine batters in the lineup had at least one hit in the game.

“This was the first time we have had our entire lineup and it showed,” Flor said. “Hitting is contagious.”

Bockenstedt complimented the defense behind him also in the win.

“The guys were making the plays behind me, so it is easy to get it over the plate — I know they are going to get to it,” he said.
