Franta, Greyhounds shut down Jaguars in 2A winner’s bracket

By Jim Bastian Journal Sports Writer NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral righthander Levi Franta was near perfect Thursday afternoon in the Greyhounds Section 2A Baseball Tournament winner’s bracket game against Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman. The junior did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and allowed just one more baserunner — a walk in the seventh — as Cathedral blanked the Jaguars 6-0 at Johnson Park. Franta, who threw 80 pitches in the game, struck out 10 as the Greyhounds improved to 17-5. Kaiden Musser took the loss for the Jaguars. He went four innings and was charged with four runs on five hits. He walked six but threw 107 pitches. Kyle Seidl and Caleb Forstner each had two hits for Cathedral, while Carter Haala drove in two runs. Cathedral will now play Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at ISG Field in Mankato against Sleepy Eye. “Levi was really good today, “ Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas said. “He has been good all year and he has stepped up in big game — threw a one-hitter — and even that was a bleeder to left field. “He attacked the strike zone and had no free bases until the seventh inning. He was locked in.” Franta said that he felt in control all game. “I had a good defense behind me and I knew that they would make the plays,” he said. Franta retired the first 11 batters he faced before Peyton Franzon blooped a two-out fly ball to left in the top of the fourth. He got the final out on a ground ball before he sat down the next eight Jaguars hitters before he issued his only walk of the game with two outs in the seventh inning. “This was probably one of my best games,” Franta said. “I knew that I had a no-hitter going, but it did not get in my head that much. I was in rythym all game.” And the Greyhounds used some small-ball to score a run in the bottom of the second and add four more in the third. Brock Wellmann led off the second with a walk and stole second — one of 10 stolen bases in the game. The Greyhounds were 10 for 11 in stolen bases in the game. Caleb Forstner was hit by a pitch. They each moved up a base on a double steal. Wellmann raced home on a Colin Anderson infield single. In the third, Kyle Seidl walked and swiped second. He scored on a throwing error after a Franta grounder. Thomas Finstad followed with a walk and stole second. Carter Haala then laid down a suicide-squeeze bunt that scored Franta and also brought in Finstad for a 4-0 lead. Matt Seidl singled, stole second and scored on a Caleb Forstner double. “We found ways to manufacture runs and we did a good job of executing,” Woitas said. “Carter had that big squeeze bunt that ended up scoring two runs. A lot of people stepped up in big ways today.” The Greyhounds put a ribbon on the game in the fifth on a Forstner single, their 10th stolen base and a Logan Mielke single.
