Area roundup: River Valley boys, girls take 2nd at subsection meet Thursday
PREP TRACK AND FIELD
ARLINGTON — Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral, River Valley and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop all competed in the Section 2A, North Subsection Track and Field Meet on Thursday in Arlington, with several athletes earning trips to next week’s Section 2A finals in Mankato.
River Valley finished second in the boys meet with 93 points, while GFW took third 91 points. MVL/NUC tied for fourth with 78 points. On the girls side of the meet, River Valley once again finished second with 116 points, while MVL/NUC finished ninth with 41 points and GFW finished 10th with 39 points.
Leading the River Valley boys was Toby Hagen, who finished first in the 100-meter wheelchair (30.09), the 200 meter wheelchair (1:03.37), the wheelchair shot put (11-10) and the wheelchair discus (28-01). Kaden Ryer finished third in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.62) and the 300-meter hurdles (43.75), and the River Valley 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams both finished first with times of 45.76 and 3:40.64, respectively.
The River Valley girls were led by Katie Thram, who finished first in the 100m hurdles (17.08) and the 300m hurdles (48.40). Hailey Hollar finished second in the 200m (26.71), while Brynne Ibberson finished second in the 400m (1:01.04). Marissa Pabst finished second in the 800m (2:25.89), while Abby Schwartz finished third in the high jump (4-10) and Leah Kucera finished first in the triple jump (32-02.5). The River Valley 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams all finished second with times of 52.53, 4:17.09 and 10:10.65, respectively.
The GFW boys were led by Garrett Schmidt, who finished first in the 110m hurdles (15.46) and the 300m hurdles (43.01). Justin Messner finished first in the 400 (52.61) and third in the 200m (23.54), while Alex Johnson finished first in shot put (47-01) and discus (146-04). Brennir Peterson finished third in the high jump (5-08).
Madyson Steele led the GFW girls, finishing first in the 3200m (12:26.26) and third in the 1600m (5:44.60). The GFW 4×200 relay team finished second (1:52.20).
Leading the MVL/NUC boys was Josh Bentler, who finished second in the 100-m (11.80). Justin Thompson finished second in the 400m (53.45), while Peter Schlei finished second in the discus (123-11). Ben Halvorson finished second in the long jump (19-05), and the MVL/NUC 4×200 and 4×400 teams both finished second with times of 1:34.39 and 3:41.05, respectively.
The MVL/NUC girls were led by Claudia Weisensel, who finished third in the 100m hurdles (17.42), while Emily Brown finished third in the 300m hurdles (51.72).
Top eight individuals and top four relay teams from this meet qualified for next week’s finals in Mankato.

BEA 8, New Ulm 7
BLUE EARTH — Blue Earth Area defeated New Ulm 8-7 in the first round of the Section 2AA baseball playoffs on Thursday.
Ben Hohensee took the loss on the mound for the Eagles, getting two strikeouts and allowing six hits and three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched. At the plate for New Ulm, Ethan Thompson was 2 for 4 with and RBI, while Kaden Larson was 2 for 4. Ayden Jensen had a home run and two RBIs.
New Ulm finishes their season 4-14.
