NEW ULM — For the second day in a row, New Ulm made it a short day of tennis.
After downing the Fairmont Cardinals 7-0 Monday in Fairmont and not dropping a single set along the way, the Eagles won every set again on Tuesday and flew by Worthington 7-0 at New Ulm High School in Big South Conference boys tennis action.
The win moved the Eagles to 4-0 on the year in dual meets.
The closest match of the day came in Ben Brownfield’s No. 2 singles win over Ezra Bonnett. Brownfield won 6-1, 7-5.
Brownfield was quick to credit his opponent for the tough match but was happy to close the match out in two sets regardless.
“I’m going to be honest, he was probably better than me,” Brownfield said. “He was shoving it towards me and I just really couldn’t get strong shots against him. I was just able to kind of hang in there, keep him back, play consistent and I kind of won on his mistakes. So it wasn’t the greatest feeling of a win, but a win’s a win.”
At No. 1 singles, Maverick Johnson downed Ian Barber 6-2, 6-1. No. 3 singles player Thomas Schwartz defeated Evan Hansberger 6-0, 6-2, while Keenan Davis downed Oziel Briones 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
In doubles action, New Ulm’s No. 1 doubles team of Nathaniel Janssen and Leo Waloch continued to roll with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lance Gordon and Bennett Oberloh. At No. 2 doubles, Rylan O’Neill and Aaron Black defeated Kaw Blay and Victory Bu 6-1, 6-1, while Gideon Heins and Joey Kotten rounded out doubles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dylan Dykstra and Caleb Barber at No. 3 doubles.
Brownfield, a senior on a team filled with a lot of underclassmen potential this year, said he’s happy to be contributing more to the team success this season.
“For me, last year, the team was very good,” Brownfield said. “But I was unfortunately a junior in one of the higher spots, I just didn’t get many wins. It’s nice for me to be part of the team’s win. … I think we’re really strong this year, so I’m really happy in my senior year with all my friends, we’re all kind of crushing it right now.”
The Eagles will have a tough conference challenge on Thursday when they host St. Peter, but Brownfield is confident and is looking forward to bringing his ‘A’ game Thursday.
“Obviously, I’d still love to see a sweep again, that’d be really nice,” he said. “But, realistically, I just want to win for the team and for myself, too. Because I think I can win against that team and I think a lot of my teammates can. Maybe we won’t win every single game, but I think we can win it.”
