Area roundup: Benson drops 40 for Eagles in third-place win over Loyola at BLC

BOYS BASKETBALL

New Ulm 96, Mankato Loyola 61

MANKATO — Behind Colton Benson’s 40 points, New Ulm High School cruised to a 96-61 win over Mankato Loyola in the third-place game of the Kwik Trip Holiday Tournament at Bethany Lutheran College on Thursday.

James Osborne added 20 points for the Eagles in the win, while Nate Firle, Collin Horning and Easton Clark each had 9 points.

New Ulm is at St. James for a 7:15 p.m. game Tuesday.

MVL 72, St. Clair 59

MANKATO — Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed St. Clair 72-59 in a boys basketball consolation title game at the Kwik Trip Holiday Tournament Thursday at Bethany Lutheran College.

Ben Pearson led the Chargers in the win with 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Cole Thompson had 15 points and Aaron Black had 10 points and five rebounds. Malachi Kohls grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds for MVL also ad had 7 points, while Ty Sexton added 7 points.

Pearson was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Brandon Meng led St. Clair with 24 points.

MVL hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cedar Mountain 64, RRC 51

COTTONWOOD — Cedar Mountain topped Red Rock Central 64-51 on Thursday in boys basketball action at the Lakeview Holiday Tournament.

Branndon Pendleton led the Cougars in the win with 21 points, six rebounds and five steals, while Blake Steffl had 19 points, four steals and three assists. Black Schueller added 13 points and four rebounds for Cedar Mountain, while Max Pendleton had 9 points and eight rebounds and Dakota Pendleton Sam had nine assists and eight rebounds.

Cedar Mountain plays again in the tourney at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

WWG 62, Wabasso 35

WABASSO — Westbrook-Walnut Grove downed Wabasso 62-35 on Thursday in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Karson Bock led Wabasso with 14 points, while Tristan Larson added 10 points.

Wabasso hosts Cedar Mountain for Tomahawk Conference action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

New Ulm 67, Chatfield 43

WINONA — New Ulm finished its time in the Lewiston Auto Holiday Classic at Winona State University going 2-0 after defeating Chatfield 67-43 on Thursday.

Daviney Dreckman led the Eagles with 22 points and six rebounds, while Morgan Hulke had 12 points and four rebounds and Bryn Nesvold had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Maddie Backer added 8 points, five steals and four assists for New Ulm also.

New Ulm hosts St. James on Tuesday.

Cedar Mountain 56, A/E 53

COTTONWOOD — Cedar Mountain held off Adrian/Ellsworth 56-53 on Thursday at Lakeview High School in a girls basketball game at the North Star Mutual Holiday Classic.

Aubrey Steffl led the Cougars with 22 points, while Teresa Larsen added 12 points.

Adrian/Ellsworth was led by Sadie Krahling’s 22 points.

Cedar Mountain (4-2) takes on Lakeview at the Classic Friday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

New Ulm 5, Sartell/SR 1

SARTELL — The New Ulm girls hockey team closed out its time in the Storm’n Sabres Holiday Showcase at Bernick’s Arena with a 5-1 win over Sartell/Sauk Rapids on Thursday.

Four different players netted goals for the Eagles in the win, with Michelle Smith getting the Eagles on the board first 1:10 into the first period. Madalynn Olson scored two goals to lead the Eagles, while Mya Hornick and Malorie Anderson each had a goal.

Smith, Olson, Hornick and Afton Hulke also each had an assist for New Ulm.

Ava Brennan made 29 saves in net for New Ulm. The Eagles had 29 shots on goal.

New Ulm hosts Marshall at 7 p.m. Thursday.

BOYS HOCKEY

New Ulm 4, Fort Frances 2

FERGUS FALLS — New Ulm topped Fort Frances (Ontario) 4-2 on Thursday in the third round of boys hockey action at the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic.

New Ulm outshot Fort Frances 33-22 in the win and took a 4-0 lead early in the third period on a power-play goal from Dawson Kraus.

Austin Uecker, Blake Soukup, Ian Brudelie and Kraus all scored a goal for New Ulm, with Nick Zins adding two assists. Soukup, Kraus and Hansen each added a helper.

Bryer Hoffmann made 20 saves in net for New Ulm.

New Ulm hosts Redwood Valley at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
