SLEEPY EYE — After being swept last week by Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at St. Mary’s High School, Sleepy Eye High School returned the favor on Thursday at home with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 win over St. Mary’s in a nonconference volleyball match.
Kadence Hesse led the Indians with 13 kills and 22 digs, while Breaunna Mertz had 11 kills, 10 digs, five aces and two blocks and Brooke Arneson had 23 set assists, 26 digs and two aces. Paige Haala added 22 digs for Sleepy Eye, while Sam Price had five kills.
No stats were reported for St. Mary’s.
Sleepy Eye (15-5-1) plays at St. Clair on Monday, while St. Mary’s is at Nicollet on Monday.
New Ulm 3, St. James 2
ST. JAMES — New Ulm held off St. James Area for a 22-25, 25-9, 25-19, 26-28, 15-10 win Thursday night in a Big South Conference volleyball match.
The Eagles were led by Laura Bertrang’s 19 kills and eight blocks, while Amber Lee had 45 set assists, 17 digs, three aces and two kills. Emma Gieseke had 13 kills also for New Ulm, while Ella Landsteiner added eight kills and seven digs, Evelyn Friese had six kills, Ella Freiderich had 23 digs and four aces and Afton Hulke had 10 digs, eight ace serves and three kills.
New Ulm (10-7, 7-2) hosts Waseca on Monday night.
Maple River 3, MVL 1
MAPLETON — Maple River defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 10-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-14 on Thursday in a nonconference volleyball match.
Ava Munsen led MVL with 14 kills, three blocks and three ace serves, while Mackenzie Merseth had nine kills, 16 digs and two blocks, Gabbie Bleick had 10 kills and 11 digs and Kerigan Brau had 33 set assists and 15 digs. Ella Hunter added 19 digs for MVL, while Lexi Meunier had 14 digs and Becca Kuck had seven kills.
MVL is at Springfield on Tuesday night.
