Cubs top Tigers in 2C winner’s bracket, Hanska upsets Stark Saturday
SLEEPY EYE — The Courtland Cubs moved on in the winner’s bracket of the Region 2C amateur baseball tournament on Saturday with a 10-2 win over the Springfield Tigers at Eagles Park.
The Tigers dropped to the loser’s bracket with the loss. Courtland will continue play in the winner’s bracket in Fairfax on Saturday against New Ulm.
Courtland was led by Nolan Drill, who was 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Chase Meyer was 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs. Maddox Mortensen was 2 for 4 also for the Cubs, while Carter Lang was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Jackson Bode got the win in all nine innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five.
The Tigers were led by Jordan Milbrath, who was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Andre Hirsch and Brandon Wilhelmi each had an RBI. Justin Haugo took the loss for Springfield in 3 2/3 innings, giving up nine hits and a walk for five earned runs while striking out two.
ALSO ON SATURDAY
The seventh-seeded Hanska Lakers upset second-seeded Stark 5-4 to move on in the winner’s bracket. Stark scored four runs in the ninth but came up short.
Aaron Portner got the win for Hanska in eight innings, while Brady Mosenden picked up the save. Eric Portner had a three-run double and a sac fly to lead Hanska at the plate, while Chris Knowles added an RBI.
Zach Haala had an RBI single to get Stark on the board first, while Dylan Klein drove in two runs in the ninth on a single. Haala took the loss on the mound.
Also in winner’s bracket action on Saturday, the Lamberton Long Sox defeated the Leavenworth Orioles 5-0 behind a one-hitter from Eli Fest. Fest lost the no-hitter in the ninth inning.
The Long Sox had 15 hits in the win and also picked up their 500th win in history.
