TEL roundup: Gibbon’s big inning trumps Essig’s in Reds’ win

GIBBON 10, ESSIG 7

ESSIG — The Gibbon Reds broke things open with a seven-run fourth inning and survived a comeback attempt by the Essig Bluejays Wednesday night to win 10-7 in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

The teams were tied at 1-all until the Reds plated seven runs in the fourth to lead 8-1, led by Ethan Schwarzrock’s two-run double in a five-hit inning. After allowing another Gibbon run in the sixth, the Bluejays answered with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the gap and trail 9-7. Essig’s big six-run inning was highlighted by a three-run double by Zach Riederer.

The Reds added another run in the ninth on another run-scoring double by Schwarzrock before Nolan Huiras took the mount in the bottom of the ninth, allowing one hit and striking out two for the save.

Schwarzrock finished 3 for 4 with his two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Gibbon bats, while Brendan Kienlen was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Dominic Rose and Huiras also each had a double, with Huiras driving in a run. Rose got the mound win in five innings, allowing three hits and four walks for one unearned run while striking out eight.

Joey Schugel and Jack Helget each went 2 for 5 to lead the Essig bats, with one of Schugel’s hits being a double. Winsten Nienhaus took the pitching loss in four innings, allowing six hits and three walks for eight runs, seven earned, while striking out three. Riederer pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief, striking out six while allowing two hits and four walks for two earned runs. Josh Forstner also pitched 2/3 innings for Essig, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Gibbon moved to 3-2 in the TEL, while Essig dropped to 1-6.

NEW ULM 15, SLEEPY EYE 14

SLEEPY EYE — Josh Seidl’s RBI single in the top of the ninth broke a 14-all tie and lifted the New Ulm Brewers to a 15-14 win over the Sleepy Eye Indians Wednesday night in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

Seidl finished 2 for 6 at the plate. Ayden Jensen led the New Ulm bats, going 3 for 6 with a home run and four RBIs, while Lucas Suess was 3 for 6 as the leadoff hitter. Cole Ranweiler also was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs, while JT Hoffmann was 2 for 5 with a double, an RBI, two walks and four runs scored. Ethan Thompson also went 2 for 5 with three RBIs for New Ulm.

Ranweiler got the win on the mound in two innings of relief, allowing three hits and a walk for two unearned runs while striking out two.

Matt Mielke led the Indians at the plate, going 5 for 6 with a double, while Cody Schultz was 4 for 5 with an RBI and Jacob Fulmer was 4 for 6 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. Nick Mielke also was 2 for 6 with four RBIs, while Cole Eckstein was 2 for 6 with an RBI and Luke Mielke was 1 for 5 with a double, three RBIs, a walk and three runs scored.

Schultz took the loss in 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing five hits and no walks for two earned runs while striking out one.

New Ulm moved to 4-1 in the TEL with the win, while Sleepy Eye fell to 1-4.

HANSKA 4, LEAVENWORTH 2 (10 INNINGS)

LEAVENWORTH — The Hanska Lakers earned a 4-2 win in extra innings Wednesday over the Leavenworth Orioles thanks to Chris Knowles’ two-run homer to left in the top of the 10th.

Chris Knowles finished 1 for 3 with two walks and his big two-run homer, while Sam Knowles led the Hanska bats by going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Sam Knowles also got the win, pitching all 10 innings and allowing eight hits and no walks for two earned runs while striking out five. He threw 110 pitches on the night.

Jackson Huiras led Leavenworth at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Jackson Ludewig took the loss on the mound in 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits and and a walk for two earned runs while striking out three. He pitched in relief of Mark Anderson, who went 7 1/3 innings and allowed four hits and three walks for two earned runs while fanning nine.

Hanska improved to a perfect 6-0 start in the TEL, while Leavenworth fell to 2-2 in league play.

COURTLAND 13, ST. JAMES 0 (7 INNINGS)

ST. JAMES — The Courtland Cubs routed the St. James A’s 13-0 on Wednesday in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

The game ended in seven innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

Jaden Drill was 2 for 2 with a double, a walk and two RBIs to lead the Cubs at the plate, while Nik Johnson was 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs. Jackson Bode was 1 for 3 with a double, a walk and two RBIs also for the Cubs, while Carter Lang was 1 for 2 with a double, two walks and an RBI.

Chase Meyer pitched all seven innings to get the shutout, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out 11.

St. James’ two hits came on singles by Reggie Blom and Alejandro Garcia. Connor Jones took the loss for the A’s in 2 1/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on three hits and four walks.

Courtland moved its TEL record to 3-2 with the win, while St. James dropped to 2-4 in league play.
