Gold ends Gopher Classic with 3 consecutive wins

ELKO — The New Ulm Legion Gold dropped their first two games in the Gopher Classic American Legion Baseball Tournament on Friday but rebounded on Saturday and Sunday with three wins to finish 3-2.

Gold fell to Gillette Wyoming (12-4) and Omaha Millard (14-10) on Friday. They then defeated East Grand Forks (6-5) Saturday and LaCrescent WI (9-0, 6 inn.) and Lakeville North (11-1, 5 inn.) on Sunday.

In the loss to Gillette Wyoming, Carter Lang was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while Josh Giefer was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Caleb Carlovsky took the loss in three innings, giving up seven hits and six walks for eight earned runs while striking out one.

In the loss to Omaha Millard, Lang led the Gold bats, going 2 for 2 with a homer and five RBIs. Giefer, Jaden Drill and Ayden Jensen also all had two hits, with Jensen driving in a pair of runs. Maddox Mortensen took the loss in an inning of relief, giving up two earned runs and fanning one.

Gold got into the wins column on Saturday with a 6-5 win over East Grand Forks. Mortensen led Gold at the plate, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Giefer got the win in five innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits and seven walks and striking out four. Lang pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Gold then moved on to shut out LaCrescent WI by a score of 9-0 in six innings on Sunday. Jaden Drill got the six-inning shutout, giving up three hits and five walks while fanning four. He was also 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Lang was 2 for 4 with his second home run of the tournament, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Gold wrapped up its time in the tournament with an 11-1 win in five innings over Lakeville North. Mortensen, Lang, Jacob Berg and Jace Schaefer each had two hits in the win, with Lang and Berg each driving in two runs. Lang got the win in all five innings, giving up three hits and fanning three.
