St. Mary’s downs MVL in 6
NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s crushed Minnesota Valley Lutheran 11-1 in six innings on Monday in a Tomahawk Conference softball contest.
Lacey Mathiowetz was the winning pitcher. She went six innings, giving up one run on two hits with six strikeouts, one walk and one hit by pitch.
Becca Kuck took the loss. She pitched six innings, gave up 11 runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks. On Friday, Kuck got her 100th strike in a home game against Martin County West.
The Chargers had five costly errors combined with St. Marys’ good pitching, solid defense and getting hits at key moments that were all factors contributing to the final outcome.
Julia Helget opened the game in the top of the first with an infield single. She scored on Kya Krzmarzick’s left-field double.
St. Mary’s sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the second inning which resulted in it scoring three runs for a 4-0 lead.
The Knights’ Isabella Hoffmann reached base in the top of the fourth inning in an MVL error. Helget doubled. Krzmarzick’s double scored Hoffmann and Helget. Mathiowetz then walked before Zarn’s double brought in Mathiowetz and Krzmarzick for an 8-0 St. Mary’s lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Sam Dalueg cracked a double into left field. She scored on a sacrifice. The Chargers were looking for more, but the Knights’ defense pulled off a double play. Mathiowetz got Ashlyn Rodewald to pop out to left fielder Adeline Hoffmann to end the threat.
Hoffmann hit a single to left field. She scored later on a hit by Maya Nelson. Labat’s hit scored Hose and Labat for the Knight’s final two runs in the top of the sixth.
Briley Henderson got MVL’s second hit of the game when she cracked a single down the third base line in the bottom of the sixth inning. St. Marys’ defense again come through to ensure that MVL would not score another run.
Helget went 3 for 4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Maya Nelson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Labat went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and one run scored. Hose went 1 for 4 with two runs scored. Addie Hoffmann and Isabella Hoffmann each had a hit for the Knights, with each scoring one time.
St. Mary’s (13-4) will travel to Cleveland on Tuesday. MVL will travel to Springfield on Tuesday.
