NEW ULM — Lester Prairie’s Addison Hoof led the Bulldogs past New Ulm Cathedral 52-22 on Friday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game. Hoof finished with 24 points, with 11 of them coming in the first half.
The Bulldogs played an all-around solid and consistent game on both sides of the ball. They played well defensively, rebounded, and ran the offense which resulted in points. Jessa Heimerl added 10 points.
Cathedral struggled with three scoring droughts throughout the contest. It wasn’t for a lack of effort on the Greyhounds part. It was a tough time for them to generate any offense.
Cathedral scored 10 points in the first half and only 12 points in the second half. Lester Prairie scored 26 points in each half.
Both teams utilized full-court presses early in the game. Cathedral switched to a half-court defense in hopes of slowing down the Bulldogs and getting more chances to score baskets.
Early in the second half, Jenna Heimerl started an 8-0 run for Lester Prairie. Hoof scored 6 of those points, with her scoring back-to-back fast-break layups. The first one came off a Bulldog rebound and the second came from a Greyhound turnover. Emily Schommer ended the drought with a basket for a 38-14 score for Lester Prairie.
A short time later, Hoof scored two more baskets. Miranda Mallak added a free throw. Margo Finstad answered for the Greyhounds with a 3.
The contest started out well for Cathedral with two baskets by Jenna Hotovec, one by Shay Wilfahrt and a steal that led to a layup by Maddie Gilles. Kara Lee’s 3 came in between the Wilfahrt and Hotovec’s second basket to give Cathedral and early 8-3 lead.
Hoof went to work, scoring a basket and making the free throw. She tied it with a fast-break layup. Jessa Heimerl hit two free throws with 13:15 left which regained Lester Prairie’s lead of 10-8. Hoof scored two consecutive baskets on fast-break layups off Cathedral turnovers.
Hotovec led the Greyhounds with 6 points. Gilles scored 5 points for Cathedral.
Cathedral (5-17, 0-5) will play at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday.
