Uecker leads New Ulm past Fairmont

NEW ULM — Austin Uecker’s two goals lifted the New Ulm Eagles to a 4-2 win over Fairmont Tuesday night at the New Ulm Civic Center in a Big South Conference game.

It was New Ulm’s 39th straight conference win.

Evan Griebel and Braxten Hoffmann each added a goal.

Uecker, Blake Soukup, Griebel and Bryar Lang added assists.

New Ulm goaltender Bryer Hoffmann stopped 23 of 25 Fairmont shots as New Ulm improved to 11-0 in conference play and 14-5 overall.

“If was not our best effort but we got the win,” New Ulm coach Ryan Neuman said. “Our first period was very sloppy but we took control in the second and third period — we just were not getting pucks to the net. We were trying to get too cute.”

The Eagles, who host Luverne Thursday, fell behind after the first 17 minutes when Thomas Claeys gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at the 8:22 mark.

New Ulm tied the game at the 1:12 mark when Griebel broke in all alone on Fairmont goalie Carson Johnson and lifted a backhander by him.

But Fairmont regained the lead just under two minutes later when Eli Anderson put a rebound by Hoffmann for a 2-1 lead.

New Ulm came back to tie the game again on a Hoffmann goal at the 9:58 mark sending the game tied into the third period.

“I was not too nervous on the bench,” Neuman said about being tied going into the third period. “I knew eventually one was going to pop for us. We had the momentum.”

Uecker kept the momentum with his two goals in the final period.

“It is nice for us to win a close game for us to get ready for playoffs,” Neuman said.
