Area roundup: USC eliminates Cathedral from Section 2A playoffs

USC 39, Cathedral 7

WELLS — United South Central downed New Ulm Cathedral 39-7 on Tuesday night in a Section 2A playoff football game.

Levi Jakes led the Greyhounds with 94 yards rushing and a TD on 11 carries. He was also in on nine tackles, while Sam Knowles had 15 tackles and a blocked PAT. Thomas Finstad had 12 tackles for Cathedral, who ends it season with a 4-5 record.

GFW 42, JWP 12

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop breezed past Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 42-12 on Tuesday night in Section 2A playoff football action.

The Thunderbirds were led by Treay Taylor’s 169 yards rushing and two TDs on 16 carries, while Nick TenEyck rushed for 152 yards and three TDs on 12 carries. Jacob Rose added a rushing TD and 56 yards on the ground on seven carries for GFW.

Tristian Kruger led the GFW defense with 10 1/2 tackles, while TenEyck had 7 1/2 tackles and Jack Panitzke had six tackles and an interception.

GFW (7-2) will now host Lester Prairie in the next round of playoffs at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Cedar Mountain 50, BLHS 12

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain coasted to a 50-12 win over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday night in Section 2, 9-man playoff action.

The Cougars were led by Nick Freitag’s 142 rushing yards and rushing TD on six carries, while Matt Zeug had 88 yards rushing and two TDs. Cooper Freitag threw for a TD and 66 yards on 5-of-6 passing for the Cougars and rushed for two TDs. Nick Freitag also caught two passes for 36 yards and a score.

Zeug led the Cedar Mountain defense with 11 1/2 tackles, while Lane Guggisberg had an interception.

The Cougars (5-4) now travel to take on top-seeded Hancock on Saturday.

MLA 58, Madelia 0

MOUNTAIN LAKE — Mountain Lake Area shut out Madelia 58-0 on Tuesday in a Section 3, 9-man football playoff game.

Eric Anderson led the Madelia offense with 55 yards rushing on 16 carries, while Jed Altenburg ran for 37 yards on five carries. Anderson also led the Madelia defense with eight tackles, while Dylan Grev had six tackles.

Madelia ends its season with an 0-9 record.
