Young pitchers look sharp in Brewers-Yankees game

NEW ULM — If you were at the New Ulm Brewers-Milroy Class C State Tournament game Sunday in Chaska, you saw a game that came down to two young left-handed pitchers who each had just finished their high school careers a month earlier in a classic pitcher’s duel.

And now they were on a stage before a crowd size that probably neither of them had pitched in front of before.

And both of them pitched well.

Josh Kingery, who had pitched for Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City High School in the spring and Ethan Stade, who threw for the New Ulm Eagles, dueled for five innings.

Kingery, who struck out 182 batters walked six and posted an 0.48 ERA and won 13 games for ACGC this year, faced Stade.

Stade had gone 7-1 for the Eagles and had fanned 60 batters in just over 47 innings and had a 1.18 ERA.

Kingery, who played for the Atwater Chuckers in amateur ball and had been drafted by Milroy, started the game.

Stade, who played for the Brewers this season, came in relief of New Ulm ace Mitch Bockenstedt (8-2) in the fifth inning after the Yankees had tied the game at 3-3 and had runners on second and third with no outs.

Stade came in and got out of the jam without allowing a run.

Both left-handers kept each other’s team off of the scoreboard until Milroy won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning.

“He did his job,” Brewers coach Al Flor said about the Minnesota State-bound Stade. “We could not give him a run and it is what it is. He did a great job for us coming in during that kind of a situation.”

Stade is also eligible for Legion baseball in New Ulm next year.

One wonders how good Stade can become after a year of college baseball next year.

And it came down to the lack of hitting for the Brewers — a team that had hit the ball well all year — had just four hits in the loss.

The Brewers ended their season at 27-11.

CHANHASSEN WINS CLASS B: The Chanhassen Redbirds won the Class B championship Sunday with a 9-2 win over Miesville with a New Ulm connection.

Former New Ulmites Zach Hoffmann and Aaron Pfaff played for Chanhassen and both were named to the Class B All-Tournament team.

It was Chanhassen’s fourth straight Class B title.
