NORTH MANKATO — No. 4-seeded Springfield upset two teams seeded higher on Saturday at Caswell Park in Section 2A softball playoff action.
First, they downed the top-seeded Greyhounds 9-6 before moving on to pick up a come-from-behind 12-7 win over third-seeded Nicollet.
Brooklyn Sturm led the Tigers against Cathedral, going 3 for 4 with a homer and five RBIs. Megan Ploeger and Jalivia Richert had two hits apiece for the Tigers, with Ploeger adding two RBIs. Richert got the win in seven innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out six and walking three.
In the win over Nicollet, Springfield scored 11 unanswered runs to take the win, with one run in the third, five in the sixth and five in the seventh. Nicollet committed five errors in the game, while Springfield had three.
Astrid Ramirez led the Tigers with three hits, while Sturm and Courtney Wendt added two hits.
Springfield now awaits the winner of the 7 p.m. elimination game Tuesday. Springfield will then take on that winner on Thursday, where one win will move Springfield to state. If the Tigers lose their first game on Thursday, a rematch will follow that night, with the winner of that game moving on to state.
Nicollet 10, Madelia 0, 5 innings
Springfield 12, Nicollet 7
NORTH MANKATO — After downing Madelia 10-0 in five innings, Nicollet fell to Springfield 12-7 on Saturday in Section 2A playoff action at Caswell Park.
Marah Hulke got the win against Madelia, striking out seven and giving up two hits and a walk. She also had two hits, a double and a run scored, while Hayley Selby had two hits with a double and three runs scored. Olivia Whitmore had a grand slam also against Madelia.
Against Springfield, Selby took the loss, giving up nine hits and four walks while striking out six. Hulke went 2 for 3 with a two-run homer, while Leah Bode, Olivia Whitmore and Kassidi Gomez each had two hits.
Nicollet plays again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Caswell Park in an elimination game.
Edgerton 3, Wabasso 0
Wabasso 12, RRC/WWG 2, 6 innings
EDGERTON — Edgerton topped Wabasso 3-0 on Saturday in the winner’s bracket of the Section 3A playoffs, bumping the Rabbits to an elimination game with Red Rock Central/Westbrook Walnut Grove.
Against RRC/WWG, Wabasso breezed to a 12-2 win in six innings to stay alive.
In the loss to Edgerton, Sarah Franta took the loss, giving up five hits while striking out three. She also singled in the game, along with Kelsey Frank, Kelsey Fischer, Halle Huhnerkoch and Avery Carlson.
Against RRC/WWG, Franta got the win, striking out three and allowing four hits. She was also 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Carlson had a double and a triple also for the Rabbits while collecting four RBIs. Frank and Sophia Hanna both collected a pair of hits, while Fischer had a double with three RBIs. Madeline Hanna and Huhnerkoch each added a hit in the game as well.
Wabasso now plays Lac Qui Parle Valley in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Cottonwood. The winner of that game will play again later that night for the right to the section finals.
Nicollet 10, Madelia 0, 5 innings
St. Mary’s 10, Madelia 0, 5 innings
NORTH MANKATO — Madelia was eliminated from the Section 2A softball playoffs on Saturday after a 10-0 loss to Nicollet in five innings and a 10-0 loss to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in five innings.
Against Nicollet, Jada Taylor had two hits to lead the way, while Corban Tatro took the loss in three innings of work, giving up five earned runs with four strikeouts.
Against St. Mary’s, Kylie Smith and Emma Coil had Madelia’s two hits in the game, while Tatro took the loss in four innings, giving up six earned runs and fanning two.
The Knights were led by Julie Helget, who was 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Allie Labat and Isabella Hoffmann each had two hits also for St. Mary’s. Lacey Mathiowetz got the win against Madelia in five innings with six strikeouts. No stats were reported for St. Marys’ earlier game against Martin County West, where the Knights won 16-9.
Madelia ends its season with a 12-9 record, while St. Mary’s plays again at 5 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination bracket game against BLHS.
