SANBORN — Springfield senior Mavrick Winkelmann’s even-par score in the final leg of the Tomahawk Conference Boys’ Golf Tournament on Monday was more than enough for him to run away with his first individual Tomahawk title.
At the nine-hole, par 36 Farmers Golf and Health Club, Winkelmann medaled with a 72, putting his point total up to 77 after three legs and earning him the Tomahawk title.
Winkelmann finished second in the last Tomahawk tourney in 2019 as a sophomore, and he was back in full force this year. He finished first during the first leg at Oakdale Golf Club on April 21, fourth in the second leg at the New Ulm Country Club on April 27 and finally first again in Sanborn on Monday.
“It feels really, really good,” Winkelmann said. “It’s something I’ve been working at, been one of my goals since I started in seventh grade. And to see it all come to life, it feels good.”
Winkelmann ran into some trouble on Monday and had some issues finding the green, but he consistently rebounded well and got his putts to drop.
“I think the putter treated me really, really well today,” Winkelmann said. “It felt good to make those 10-footers because I’ve struggled with that in the past — and make them redemption putts. But one thing I’ve always told myself is, ‘You hit a bad shot, there’s nothing you can do about it. You’ve got to pick up, move on, do the best you can. There’s always the next shot.'”
The Sleepy Eye United boys’ team ended up taking first for the third time during the Tomahawk meet, adding another Tomahawk Conference title to the trophy case. The SEU boys saw Toby Weiss surge ahead and shoot a 77 on Monday for second place, while Logan Netzke shot a 78 for third place on Monday.
Carson Erickson and Jacob Schultz each shot an 86 for SEU to tie for sixth on Monday.
New Ulm Cathedral’s Logan Haala finished fourth on Monday with an 82, while Logan Martin of Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop shot an 84 for fifth.
After three legs, Winkelmann finished first overall with 77 points, while Haala finished second overall with a 71. Weiss took third overall with 68.5 points, Erickson took fourth with 67 points and Netzke took fifth with 66.
The Springfield boys’ team finished second on Monday with a 355. That was the Tigers’ third second-place finish this year during the Tomahawk tourney, giving them a second-place finish overall for the tournament.
CATHEDRAL’S GOBLIRSCH, MVL GIRLS CAPTURE TITLES IN SLEEPY EYE
SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral junior Kayla Goblirsch knew going into Monday how important the third leg of the Tomahawk Conference Girls’ Golf Tournament was going to be.
And she knew even before Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Nadine Clobes tied her for first overall after the second leg of the tournament on April 27.
During the 2019 Tomahawk tournament, Goblirsch led the way after the first two legs. But after a shaky third round, Springfield’s Mackenzie Lothert swooped in and took the Tomahawk title with a strong third leg, where points count for double.
After Goblirsch finished the 2021 tournament in first on Monday with a 14-over-par 86 at the Sleepy Eye Golf Club, it broke the first-place tie she had with Clobes and got her the Tomahawk title she missed out on in 2019.
“I was definitely thinking about it a little bit because that was pretty disappointing,” Goblirsch said of her 2019 Tomahawk tournament finish. “But I think I just knew that I had to be more prepared going into the third leg this year and just focus on my own game. And it turned out good.”
Goblirsch said that she’s been struggling with her drivers and made a big switch for Monday.
“I’ve really been struggling hitting my driver lately, so I did not hit my driver once today,” Goblirsch said. “I hit all irons off the box, so I was a little bit nervous about having to do that, but I ended up hitting all my iron shots pretty good and that saved me today.”
Clobes finished second on Monday with a 91, while SEU’s Liz Schwint and MVL’s Lili Mohror tied for third with a 106 and Cedar Mountain’s Keanna Hultquist took fifth with a 109.
The MVL girls’ team took home the Tomahawk team title with a 435 on Monday, which was their third first-place finish of the tournament. Cedar Mountain finished Monday with a 484, giving them a second-place finish overall for the tournament, while SEU took third with a 510. All other girls’ teams were incomplete.
MVL’s top four girls on Monday were Clobes, Mohror, Abbie Riederer (115) and Gabbie Bleick (123).
After three legs, Goblirsch finished with 79 points, Clobes finished second (77), Schwint finished third (68), Mohror took fourth (67) and Cedar Mountain’s Morgan Engholm took fifth (64).
