Lang, Eagles trounce Bluejays behind 16-run 2nd inning

NEW ULM — Led by Carter Lang’s 4-for-4 day at the plate and a 16-run second inning, New Ulm High School coasted by Waseca 27-3 on Thursday in five innings of Big South Conference baseball action.

Lang had seven RBIs in the game for New Ulm (8-1, 6-0), led by a three-run homer and a three-run double that both came in the second inning. Lang also started on the mound and pitched two innings for the win, allowing two runs on four walks and a hit while fanning three.

Isaiah Miller also went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for the Eagles, while Cole Ranweiler and Jaden Drill each had two hits and a pair of RBIs. Jack Albrecht also had a pair of hits for New Ulm.

Waseca (3-7, 0-7) starting pitcher Tyler Klinger took the loss in 1 1/3 innings. The Bluejays sent four pitchers to the mound total during the game.

Down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first, New Ulm answered with a three-run inning that was highlighted on an RBI double from Evan Wiltscheck.

Waseca trailed 3-2 after a wild pitch in the second inning before New Ulm broke things open in the bottom half of the inning for 10 hits and 16 runs.

Lang was the hero of the inning, first connecting on a three-run homer to left. After the Eagles batted around, Lang sent another pitch to left field for a three-run double.

After the lengthy inning concluded, the Eagles were in front 19-2.

The Eagles added two more runs in the third on two hits and two errors before they had another inning where they batted around in the fourth. The Eagles drew two walks and were hit by pitches three times in the inning. Ranweiler and Albrecht had RBI hits for the Eagles during the six-run inning.

The Bluejays scored their last run of the game in the fifth on a wild pitch. With one out in the inning, Eagles reliever Kedar Schmitz entered and got back-to-back strikeouts in the fifth to end the game.

New Ulm is at Hutchinson on Saturday afternoon for nonconference action.
