Cathedral knocks out Cleveland in 2A

New Ulm Cathedral 28, Cleveland 6

CLEVELAND — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Cleveland on Tuesday in a Section 2A football playoff game.

Cathedral’s Noah Wilmes had 10 carries for 51yards and one touchdown. Levi Jakes had 14 carries for 88 yards and Sam Knowles had eight carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Knowles was 3-for-6 passing for 75 yards and one touchdown. Jacob Berg caught a Knowles’ pass for a 45-yard touchdown.

Defensively, Wilmes had 12 tackles and one interception and Berg had an interception. Cole Schwartz had 10 tackles.

GFW 62, WEM 12

WINTHROP — Dominic Henrichs had five rushing touchdowns and 201 yards rushing as Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Tuesday in Section 2A football action.

Brody Hentges had 102 yards passing and he threw for two touchdowns and Nick TenEyck had 66 yards rushing and two scores. Damian Hopp had two receptions for 75 yards and Treay Taylor had a 25-yard touchdown reception for the Thunderbirds.

Springfield 41, Sleepy Eye 22

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield eliminated Sleepy Eye from the Section 3A playoffs with a 41-22 win on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye jumped out to a 16-6 lead but the Tigers stormed back. Sleepy Eye’s Arian Saenz scored on a 1-yard run and Springfield’s Kadin Johnson responded with an 18-yard run to make it 8-6 in favor of Sleepy Eye.

Saenz scored another TD to make it 16-6, but Springfield’s Jordan Toll scored on a 24-yard pass from Brendan Buerkle to cut Sleepy Eye’s lead to 16-14.

Springfield grabbed a 20-16 lead on a 61-yard run from Johnson and he scored on a 58-yard run to make it 26-16.

Toll scored his second touchdown of the game on a 65-yard interception return and Ashtin Johnson scored on a 34-yard touchdown run to put Springfield up 41-16.

Sleepy Eye’s Jackson Huiras scored on a 6-yard run for the final 41-22 margin.

Kadin Johnson finished with 276 yards rushing and three scores and Caleb Hauger had 15 tackles, including a 9-yard sack. Tori Helget had nine tackles and an interception and Jason Berberich had nine tackles.

Springfield is at Wabasso on Saturday.

Wabasso 48, MCW 0

WABASSO — Wabasso crushed Martin County West in a Section 3A football playoff game on Tuesday.

For the Rabbits, Carter Benz threw for 124 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another 40 yards and another rushing touchdown. Nick Marotzke had two rushing touchdowns and 114 yards on the ground and Hunter Taylor had a rushing touchdown and a defensive touchdown. Wyatt Soupir also had a rushing touchdown for the Rabbits.

Wabasso hosts Springfield on Saturday.

Nicollet 40, Ogilvie 24

OGILVIE — Nicollet advanced in the Section 2, 9-man football playoffs with a victory over Ogilvie on Tuesday night.

No stats were provided for the Raiders.

Nicollet will resume semifinal action on Saturday.

Prep volleyball

BLHS 3, CM 0

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart swept Cedar Mountain 25-16, 25-18, 25-12 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Hailey Hollar had eight kills and 12 digs for the Cougars and Makayla Steffensmeier had 13 digs. Morgan Engholm had nine digs and Megan Sandgren had four kills and two digs. Nadia Meyers had 11 set assists.

Chloe Ufkes had 16 digs for the Mustangs and Katie Buboltz had 12 digs. Allison Dornseif finished with 25 set assists and Emilie Hable had 11 kills. Tia Weispfenning also had 11 kills for the Mustangs.

Madelia 3, Mankato Loyola 0

MADELIA — Madelia downed Mankato Loyola 25-8, 25-18, 25-11 on Tuesday in a Valley Conference volley ball match.

Naomi Haedt had 28 set assists and five kills for the Blackhawks. Dora Facudo had 14 digs and Malia Schwanke added 10 digs. Brooke Lensing and Danikia Eisenmenger each had six kills. Corban Tatro added five kills.

Madelia (4-6) will play at Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Thursday.

GFW 3, MVL 1

NEW ULM — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-12, 25-15, 20-25, 25-8 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Brynn Busse led GFW with 18 set assists, nine digs and six blocks. Hannah Thorsen added 10 set assists and 11 digs. Hana Schroeder had 10 digs with five kills. Julia Schweiss added 15 kills.

MVL’s Sam Dalueg had 14 set assists and 13 digs. Lilli Mohor and Ella Schlei each had 10 kills.

GFW will ravel to Sleepy Eye on Thursday. MVL will travel to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday.

Nicollet 3, ML-GHEC-T 0

NICOLLET — Nicollet swept Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 25-15 in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Hayley Selby had 19 kills, 12 digs and seven blocks for Nicollet and Marah Hulke finished with 25 set assists.
