Area roundup: Benzel hits game-winner for Madelia

Boys’ basketball

Madelia 69, LC/WM 67, OT

LAKE CRYSTAL — Madelia’s Kadin Benzel scored the game-winning shot with eight seconds left in overtime as the Blackhawks defeated Lake Crystal/Wellcome Memorial in a Valley Conference Showcase boys’ basketball game.

Ja’Sean Glover led Madelia with 45 points, eight rebounds, four steals and four assists. Benzel added 15 points and four steals for Madelia.

Madelia (8-11) hosts Cleveland in a Valley Conference Showcase game at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Nicollet 78, St. Clair 59

NICOLLET — Nicollet defeated St. Clair 78-59 on Monday in a Valley Conference boys’ basketball game.

Nicollet was led by Shane Stevensen with 27 points and nine rebounds, Riley Hulke with 26 points and 12 assists and Colton Thomsen with 5 points and 14 rebounds.

Nicollet hosts Mountain Lake Area at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

New Ulm 79, Belle Plaine 75

BELLE PLAINE — New Ulm’s Charlie Osborne scored a single-game career high of 19 points as New Ulm defeated Belle Plaine on Monday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Also for New Ulm, Reece Melby had 27 points, Cole Rhode had 14 points and Isaiah Miller had 11 points.

New Ulm hosts Hutchinson for their Pediactric Cancer Awareness game at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Girls’ basketball

Sibley East 60, GFW 54

WINTHROP — Sibley East defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 60-54 on Monday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

Sibley East was led by Jaden Kmetz with 17 points and Kenzie Latzke with 15 points.

Brynn Busse led GFW with 17 points.

GFW (5-16) plays at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Wabasso.

Sleepy Eye 65,

St. James 52

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye defeated St. James 65-52 on Monday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

The Indians were led by Kaydince Thoms with 20 points and seven rebounds, Brittney Dittbenner with 19 points, four steals and four assists, Kadence Hesse with 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists and Brooklyn Moldan with 7 points and six rebounds.

Sleepy Eye (15-8) play at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Cedar Mountain.
