Bird Island Bullfrogs blast by Brewers 14-4

NEW ULM — Bird Island sent 14 men to the plate and scored eight runs in the sixth inning on Friday night against New Ulm, breaking open a tight 5-3 game on the way to a 14-4 win over the Brewers in a non-league game at Mueller Park.

The game was stopped after seven innings because of the 10-run lead rule.

Brad Gass got the win for the Bullfrogs, going four innings and allowing one run on four hits.

Mitch Kelly took the loss for the Brewers. He went three innings and was charged with four runs.

Trent Athman led the Bullfrogs with three hits, including a solo home run. Dylan Glass, Shawn Dollerschell, Jack Peppel, James Woelfel and Reed Stadtherr each had two hits as Bird Island outhit New Ulm 17-8 in the game.

Nick Fischer, Eric Austvold and Wyatt Peterson each had two hits for the Brewers.

The Brewers scored a run in the second when Austvold tripled and scored on a Kelly base hit.

Bird Island scored four times in the third on a walk, a Peppel double and singles from James Woeffel, Trevor Nissan and Stadherr.

They added a solo run in the fifth for a 5-1 lead before the Brewers scored twice in the bottom of the inning.

But Bird Island salted the game away in the eight-run sixth inning on eight hits.

Trent Althmann’s solo home run in the top of the seventh inning made it a 14-3 game before Nick Fischer’s RBI double in the bottom of the inning made it a 14-4 game.

The Brewers-Stark game scheduled for 5 p.m. on Sunday at Mueller Park has been changed to Wednesday, July 3 at Mueller Park.
