Sleepy Eye Post 7 downs NU Gold

NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye Post 7 scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie and went on to down New Ulm Legion Gold 7-5 Sunday at Mueller Park.

Jacob Berg got the win in relief of starter Nick Labat.

Cole Backer took the loss for New Ulm in relief of starter Nolan Drill.

Nathan Walter and Kyle Domeier each had two hits for Post 7 with Domeier driving in four runs.

Colton Schaefer had two hits for Gold.

“We had lost to them earlier in the year and they are a good ballclub,” Gold coach Chris Peters said. “They have some guys back that can hit the ball. But our pitchers fell behind (in the count) early and they always came up with key hits.”

And some key errors were made by the Gold defense.

“We had walks and a couple of errors that hurt is,” Peters said.

Sleepy Eye grabbbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning off of Drill. Spencer Hoffman led off with a walk and with two outs. He was sacrificed to second. Carter Brinkman was intentionally walked with two outs. It would be his first of two intentional walks in the game. He also received a third walk.

A Nathan Walter base hit scored Hoffmann. Domeier’s single later scored Brinkman and Walter.

Gold, who hosts Mankato Nationals in a doubleheader at Mueller Park tonight at 6 p.m., cut the lead to 3-1on Braden Zimmerman groundout.

Post 7 increased their lead to 5-1 in the fifth with two runs which were aided by an outfield error, two walks and a Domeier two-run double.

Gold tied the game in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs on one hit and an error.

But Sleepy Eye scored twice in the seventh when they did not get the ball out of the infield. Two infield singles, an intentional walk to Brinkman and an error resulted in two runs.

“It is early in the year,” Peters said.“We will rebound and get more confidence. We will fix some things.”
