Area roundup: Cathedral completes sweep of Springfield, MVL baseball tops Sleepy Eye

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral swept Springfield in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday.

In Game 1, Cathedral’s Josie Pautzke was the winning pitcher. She had seven strikeouts and allowed four hits.

Springfield’s Brittany Rogotzke was the losing pitcher with five strikeouts. She gave up five walks and six hits.

Cathedral was led in hitting by Abby Beranek, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a double and Emily Schommer, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Taylor Augustin went 2 for 3 for Springfield.

In Game 2, Cathedral was led by Lauryn Franta, who went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Heidi Hoffmann, who went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Shay Ubl, who went 1 for 3 with three RBIs.

Megan Ploeger went 1 for 2 for Springfield.

Cathedral (14-2) hosts Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Springfield plays at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey.

Nicollet 7, ML/GHEC/Truman 4

TRUMAN — Nicollet defeated Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther in a Valley Conference softball game on Tuesday.

For Nicollet, Brook Gohr was 2 for 2 with a run scored and Emily Bode was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Halle Johnson was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and double.

Johnson pitched six innings for the win.

St. Mary’s 7, Wabasso 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Wabasso 7-0 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.

The winning pitcher was Leah Weiss, who pitched seven innings and had five strikeouts.

Sarah Franta pitched six innings and took the loss for Wabasso. She had five strikeouts and gave up five hits, seven runs and three walks.

St. Mary’s was led in hitting by Sara Zinniel, who went 2 for 4 with one run scored and two stolen bases, Leah Weiss, who went 1 for 2 with an RBI, Cassie Heinrichs, who went 1 for 3 with one run scored, one RBI and one stolen base and Callie Bohnen, who went 1 for 1 with a stolen base.

St. Mary’s (14-3, 12-1) plays at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

Prep baseball

Madelia 3, Nicollet 2

SEARLES — Madelia defeated Nicollet 3-2 on Tuesday in a Valley Conference baseball game.

The winning pitcher was Madelia’s Logan Anderson, who had 10 strikeouts ad allowed two walks, three hits and two runs.

Riley Hulke took the loss for Nicollet with eight strikeouts and giving up two walks and eight hits.

Anderson went 4 for 4 with a triple and Blake Altenburg went 1 for 3 with an RBI for Madelia.

Madelia (3-7, 5-2) plays a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey.

MVL 8, Sleepy Eye 3

SLEEPY EYE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Sleepy Eye 8-3 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game.

The winning pitcher was MVL’s Teddy Giefer, who pitched six innings with six strikeouts and allowed six hits, three runs and two walks.

Jackson Huiras pitched five innings and took the loss for Sleepy Eye with four strikeouts and giving up six hits, four runs and two walks.

MVL was led in hitting by Jace Marotz, who went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Giefer went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and Franklin Selvey went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Sleepy Eye was led by Kadon Strong, who had three RBIs and Nathan Walter, who went 2 for 4 with one run scored.

MVL plays a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop. Sleepy Eye hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Wabasso 5, St. Mary’s 4

WABASSO — Wabasso defeated Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Tuesday.

For Wabasso, Maverick Wagner was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Sam Rabenberg was 2 for 2 for the Rabbits.

For St. Mary’s, Carson Domeier was 2 for 5 with two RBIs.

Dallas Bauer took the loss. He went 3 2/3 innings and allowed two hits and two runs.

Ryan Liebl pitched 3 2/3 innings and struck out two to earn the win.

Prep golf

St. Clair-Loyola boys 157, MVL 242

MVL girls 208, St. Clair-Loyola 211

MANKATO — The St. Clair-Loyola boys defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Tuesday in a boys’ golf meet on Tuesday.

The medalist for the boys was St. Clair-Loyola’s Noah Roe, who shot a 38.

Also for St. Clair-Loyola, Griffin Johnson and Jack Ammann each shot a 39.

MVL was led by Max Johnson, who shot a 49 and Austin Olson, who shot a 59.

On the girl’s side, the medalist was St. Clair-Loyola’s Clair Orcutt, who shot a 38.

Grace Eischens shot a 57 and Annika Wick and Emily Drummer each shot a 58 for St. Clair-Loyola.

MVL was led by Nadine Clobes, who shot a 49, Abby Riederer, who shot a 52 and Avery Weisensel, who shot a 53.
