Lothert and Kretsch win Tomahawk golf titles

FAIRFAX — Springfield’s Mackenzie Lothert needed a strong finish and a little help from her opponents on Monday in hopes of bringing home her first individual conference championship at Mayflower Country Club.

She had the strong finish, and she got the help she needed.

After the third and final leg of the Tomahawk Conference girls’ golf meet wrapped up, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart’s Audree Ginsburg and Lothert each carded a 90 to finish as co-medalists on double-point Day 3. That tie ended up sending Lothert home as Tomahawk Conference champ after the final points were tallied up for the three-day tournament.

“I think just coming into the day, I knew that I had to be consistent with my irons and hit shots well so that I’d be able to turn out with a good score and give myself a chance to get first,” Lothert said. “I think just keeping my head inside it was what changed today and got me what I needed.”

At last year’s Tomahawk tournament, Lothert led for the first two days but ended up getting passed by then-teammate Makenna Winkelmann. This year, however, Lothert came from behind to take the Tomahawk crown.

“It feels good because I finally did it,” Lothert said. “Last year definitely did not turn out the way I wanted it to with the last meet, and I didn’t have a good day. So this year, coming through and pulling out of the bad slump that I was in and doing what I had to do to get it done makes me feel accomplished.”

New Ulm Cathedral’s Kayla Goblirsch led after the first two legs of the meet but had a rough start in the final leg. Goblirsch’s fifth-place finish on Day 3 after carding a 95 bumped her down to third overall for the tournament.

On the first hole of the day, Goblirsch hooked her first shot left and into the rough, where she ended taking a drop and finishing the hole by shooting five strokes over par. Although Goblirsch fared better her second time through the course on Monday, Ginsburg remained consistent all day.

Ginsburg’s third-day score ended up boosting her from fourth overall to second for the tournament.

The team portion of the girls’ meet was won by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop after a team score of 438 on Day 3, leading the Thunderbirds to a conference title. GFW finished the first day of the meet in second before taking first on Day 2 and first again on Day 3.

GFW’s top scorers on the final day were Annie Pomplun (97), Ana Caldwell (113), Miah Busse (114) and Hannah Thorsen (114).

The Minnesota Valley Lutheran girls also battled back from being third after two days to finish second overall in the conference after a strong final day. Nadine Clobes shot a 93 to lead the Chargers, while Avery Weisensel shot a 103, Abbie Riederer shot a 119 and Lili Mohror shot a 125.

SEU AND SPRINGFIELD CROWNED CO-CHAMPIONS

WINTHROP — The Springfield boys and the Sleepy Eye United boys both had strong day at Winthrop Golf Club on Monday in Day 3 of the Tomahawk Conference boys’ golf meet, with both teams ending up tied for first to become co-champions in the conference.

SEU took first on Monday with a team score of 335, while Springfield finished second with a 338. But Springfield’s first-place finishes in the first two days of the meet and a second-place finish on Day 3 led to them grabbing a share of the Tomahawk title.

Leading the way for Springfield was medalist Mavrick Winkelmann, who shot a 73 to end up finishing second overall for the tournament. Mason Kretsch carded a 78, good for second place on the day and an individual Tomahawk title after three days.

For SEU, Carson Erickson shot a 79 for third place on the day, while Thor Weiss carded an 83, Logan Netzke carded an 86 and Andrew Neid carded an 87 to round out the top four scores on the team, all top-10 finishes on the third day.

Cathedral was led by Ethan Kirchberg, who shot a 78 to tie for second with Kretsch. Kirchberg ended up third overall in the conference after all three days.
