Steel look to stop losing skid against winless Evansville

NEW ULM — When the New Ulm Steel host Evansville for NA3HL games Friday and Saturday night at 7:10 p.m. at the New Ulm Civic Center, it will feature two teams who both are trying to break losing streaks.

The Steel (3-6-0-1, fifth in the West Division) look to stop a four-game skid.

Meanwhile, Evansville is looking for its first win of the season and come into New Ulm having lost its first 14 games.

This season, the Junior Thunderbirds have been outscored 151-11.

But right now, Steel coach Andrew Kolb said he is not looking at the record of Evansville, as his team has struggled in its last four losses. In last Saturday’s road loss to Coulee Region, the Steel outshot the Chill 31-30 but lost 9-2.

“We need to come out and score some goals and play good defensively,” he said.

The Steel have been outscored 52-31 in their 10 games.

“We need to do a lot of things better. We have these two games at home and to get some points this weekend because we do need points.”

Sitting in fifth place in the West, the Steel have 7 points, 9 points behind fourth place North Iowa and Alexandria and the last playoff spot and 13 points behind first-place Granite City and Rochester.

“I thought that we were going to get some points the last couple of weekends but we have not played well and that is unacceptable,” Kolb said. “There is a lot of frustration going on with everybody. We all have to be better and we need to control what we can control.”

Jarrett Cammarata, the Steel’s leading scorer (six goals and five assists), will not play Friday and maybe Saturday as he sits out a suspension as a result of an on-ice incident last Saturday against Coulee.

“We need to do better in terms of work ethic, competing and playing hard,” Kolb said. “Right now we lack some of that — we lack a lot of that. We need to change things up. We like our team, but if things aren’t getting accomplished, moves have to be made. It is a desperate time right now.”

Friday night is “Horejsi Graphic Night” and Horejsi Graphic will be giving out some T-shirts and some vouchers at the concession stand,

Also if the Steel win by six or more goals in any game the rest of the season, all fans attending will be given a coupon after the game for six free tacos courtesy of Taco Johns of New Ulm.
