Endorsing Ullery for city council

I am pleased to endorse Sue Ullery as a city council candidate representing Ward 4. I have known Sue as a co-worker and friend. She listens to the concerns of others, understands the challenges facing New Ulm, and treats people with respect. As a school board member for 12 years, Sue dealt with complex issues and diverse opinions. At the Brown Count Historical Society and New Ulm Public Library, Sue used her communication skills and abilities to work as part of a team to again serve the public. Sue would be an accessible representative for Ward 4, welcoming input from New Ulm ...

Remove Trump before he sinks ships

President Donald Trump is too dangerous to be the leader of the Country. I’ve tolerated a lot from this President. That ends here. My son lives in San Diego. There is a huge military presence with San Diego being home to Naval Base San Diego with 70,000 civilians and active service members in the area. L.A. is the second most populous city in the USA. It has a huge container port that is extremely important for the western USA. It is also home of the U.S. Space Force’s Command Headquarters. Neither city is expendable. My son is not expendable. 70,000 civilians and active service ...

Seek constructive solutions to high gas prices

Suspending Big Oil from their biofuel blending obligations as proposed by Stephen Moore (“Three easy ways to reduce pain at the pump,” Oct. 1) would not bring down fuel prices. Instead, it would increase prices at the pump and further pad the pockets of refiners that are making record profits as families struggle. Ethanol is the lowest-priced source of octane available. A 2025 report by a petroleum refining expert found that, if ethanol was removed from the U.S. gasoline pool, replacing its current octane contribution with refinery octane would increase refining cost and the ...

Kindness, compassion shown to veterans

I want to thank the Patriotic Piecers and the Quilts of Valor Foundation for the kindness, compassion, and understanding they have shown southern Minnesota veterans over the past years.  I also want to thank the Journal for the tenderness with which it covers all stories about veterans. As a four-year regular Army veteran processing my own PTSD, I have concluded that everyone who goes into the military leaves behind something they brought with them and takes with them something they did not bring with them. Service does not always end when a veteran out-processes.  For many of my ...

Nice to see Finstad visiting the district

I was surprised and delighted to see Carl’s Corner featured on an ad that ran during Sunday’s Vikings game. Carl’s has been a go-to place for us for decades. The chicken there is great, but don’t overlook the pizza and (my favorite) the fish. But it was a political commercial, so that took off a bit of my enthusiasm. Still, it was nice to see Brad Finstad in a local establishment, given his scarcity in the district since the last election. Troubling, though, was his touting his big accomplishment of “no taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security” which was the focus of ...

Few questions to ask candidates

Election 2026 is upon us. We need to choose wisely. Here is a list of questions we can ask candidates: 1. What does “fake news” really mean? 2. How will we repay a $40,000,000,000,000 national debt? 3. Is the Nobel Peace Prize given to people who start wars? 4. Is John McCain a hero or a loser? 5. Who pays tariffs? 6. Has your grocery bill gone down? 7. How can one person win 43 golf championships? 8. Do you agree with Donald Trump’s assessment of Pope Leo? 9. If the price of a $100 item drops 800%, how much do you have to pay? 10. Which of Venezuela, Greenland ...
