Kindness, compassion shown to veterans

1 min read

I want to thank the Patriotic Piecers and the Quilts of Valor Foundation for the kindness, compassion, and understanding they have shown southern Minnesota veterans over the past years.  I also want to thank the Journal for the tenderness with which it covers all stories about veterans.

As a four-year regular Army veteran processing my own PTSD, I have concluded that everyone who goes into the military leaves behind something they brought with them and takes with them something they did not bring with them. Service does not always end when a veteran out-processes.  For many of my brothers and sisters, wounds that are mental, emotional, and physical can remain long after their service to our nation.  For some, survivors' guilt is very real.

The quiet words from the Quilts of Valor were powerful: each quilt is "a hug from a grateful nation." When they wrap a veteran in a handmade quilt, they are proclaiming, "We see you. We remember your service. Your sacrifice mattered." Again, to each Patriotic Piecer, to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, and to our good friends at the Journal: thank you.

All gave some, and some gave all.
