Ode to Winter
To the editor:
Snow drifts lying on the close-cropped front lawn,
The slippery ice found in the skate park,
White clouds from the mouths of the passers-by,
Cheering children playing in their snow fort,
The snow man made of big, fluffy white balls,
Skidding cars on the ice covered road ways
Are some things that mean winter has arrived.
What Floridians experience snow?
What joy do they get seeing snowflakes fall?
They may read about snow or see pictures,
But the experience of winter – No!
The comfort of a warm coat and fur hat
Is lost upon these people of the South.
Only a Yankee can sing of winter
With its horse drawn sleigh rides and snowball fights.
The sight of the first snow or Christmas snow
Must be felt in person to be enjoyed.
The glory of sun dogs in the noon sky
And the taste of hot cocoa – my, oh my!
