Eagle Update: Good start to school year

We are enjoying a great school year. Students are fully engaged in their learning, teachers are honing their craft to challenge and stretch all learners and we continue to see growth in all co-curricular programs. Each year we add new programs and enhance current programs to meet student needs – whether in the classroom, on the court, on the field, in the lab, on the stage or at the job site.

To remain relevant for our students and families, we consistently evaluate our programs to ensure we are meeting their needs within the confines of resources available.

With over 2400 students enrolled in our Pre-K through 12th grade programs, we have our work cut out to provide all types of services. Our very talented and capable staff does this day-in and day-out.

Did you know that New Ulm High School offers over 45 college credits to students who attend our classes at the High School? We also offer college credit courses for students entering two-year college programs in welding, small gas engines, business and culinary arts. One of our goals this year is to provide a certification program for students desiring to enter the workforce immediately after high school.

Minnesota leads the nation in ACT scores – the measure of student readiness for college. According to a Mankato Free Press article, dated October 17, “For the second year, New Ulm Public Schools reigned as having the highest average score among districts in The Free Press coverage area with a senior class of at least 50 students.” New Ulm had an ACT composite score of 22 with 113 students taking the test. The state composite score was 21.3. While we are pleased with these results, we continue to evaluate our curriculum so we can continue to build on the high quality educational programming we offer for our students.

Our Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors continue to adjust their programs to meet community, business and industry needs. This team of instructors spent time this fall visiting other schools and communities, along with meeting with our local businesses and industry partners to learn more about ways to provide relevant career experiences. We have a great variety of CTE programming and will continue to build more each year. While our main focus is on career awareness and exploration, we are designing programs allowing students to be ready for the workforce in all of the CTE areas.
