Brown County Browser: The importance of county Income Maintenance Unit

Brown County Browser

The Income Maintenance Unit is a part of Brown County Human Services, and is located at 1117 Center Street in New Ulm. The unit helps members of the community with a variety of state and federal mandated programs.

We help people who meet program requirements, including ages from newborn to the elderly.

The programs that we administer include SNAP (food support), cash assistance, medical assistance, child care assistance and emergency assistance. Most of the help provided in Brown County is for medical needs.

The Income Maintenance Unit is available on normal business days from 8 a.m. until the office closes at 4:30 p.m.

Workers are assigned daily to assist with all walk-ins without appointments. Wait time can vary depending on the amount of traffic on that specific day. We are open over the noon hour to allow easy access to our services. We also travel to Springfield and Sleepy Eye twice a month to do outreach and take applications in those communities. Call ahead for times available.

Our team consists of 11 Eligibility Workers, 2 Childcare Assistance/Licensor Workers, 1 Case Aide, 1 Fraud Investigator and a Unit Supervisor.

Please visit our Brown County website at: www.co.brown.mn.us for additional details on programs including basic program information, eligibility criteria, and benefit information along with ways to apply for assistance. Simply go to Departments, Human Services, and then click on the Financial Assistance button on the upper right hand side of the page. Our agency telephone number is 507-359-6500 and we also have a toll-free number 1-800-450-8246.
