Margaret Ruth (Schmidt) Madson
Margaret (Schmidt) Madson was born on Jan. 11, 1938, in Faulkton, South Dakota. Her parents were the Rev.Walter J. Schmidt and his wife, Margaret (Mayer) Schmidt.
In 1942, Margaret moved with her family to Danube, Minnesota, where her father served as pastor at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. In 1946, the family moved to New Ulm, Minnesota, where her father served as pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for more than 25 years.
Margaret’s school years were therefore mostly spent in New Ulm at St. Paul’s Lutheran School, Martin Luther High School, and two years at Dr. Martin Luther College. In 1959, Margaret married Andrew Madson and moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, where her husband was teaching at Fox Valley Lutheran High School. It was in Appleton where Margaret’s two children were born — Amy Lynn, who died at the age of 42, and Douglas Paul, who is retired and living in Treasure Island, FL. Neither of her children were married.
In 1962, Margaret and her family moved to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where her husband taught at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. When her children reached school age, Margaret returned to school herself and obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She then taught at numerous schools in the Wisconsin Synod of the Lutheran Church in the Milwaukee area. In the year 2000, she retired after teaching for 24 years at St. John’s Lutheran School in Wauwatosa.
Margaret was a swimmer. As a teenager, she worked as a lifeguard at the beautiful New Ulm swimming pool at Johnson Park. She was a member of the synchronized swimming team, which performed water ballet events at various pools in southern Minnesota. She also taught waterfront safety classes for the Milwaukee chapter of the American Red Cross.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her one daughter, Amy Madson, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and her one sister, Dorothy Buyert, of Stone Mountain, Georgia.
