Joseph Harry Schobert

Joseph Harry Schobert passed away June 29, 2022, at his residence in San Diego, California. He was born April 8, 1932, in New Ulm, Minnesota. He was married to his wife Gwen Darrah for 66 years, who proceeded him in death. Although they had no children of their own, they regarded and loved their nieces and nephews as their own. Joe attended Catholic grade school and went on to graduate from New Ulm High School. He was captain of the football team that went on to win the first conference championship in school’s history. After working at different odd jobs, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He specialized in radar technology and electronics in Biloxi, Mississippi, and was stationed in both Wisconsin and Birkenfeld, Germany. In 1955 he made the big move to San Diego, California, and was hired by Convair Corp to work in the new field of computers. He went on to work at General Dynamics and Rhor as a senior programmer, and on to Naval Ocean Systems as a civilian contractor. He became computer specialist for communications and intelligence.

Joe enjoyed traveling, the Organ Society and working with his hands. He remodeled their apartments and homes, helped build family homes and built a vacation home of their own in Joshua Tree. Their travels took them to six of the seven continents of the world. They especially enjoyed England, Japan and China. He was involved in the Spreckel’s Organ Society, which put on concerts at the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Gwen; father and mother, Joseph and Helen; brother, Arthur; sisters, Anna, Lorraine and Ladonna. He is survived by 10 nieces, nephews and multiple grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Uncle Joe always had a smile to greet his family, a laugh to share and a positive attitude that always made a visit with him a treat. He will be forever missed by his family, friends and all who were lucky to be in his company. It was a life well lived.

Services and a celebration of life will be held at Cypress View Mausoleum, 3953 Imperial Ave., San Diego, California 92113 at 11 a.m. on Aug. 4, 2022.
