Marie “Tootie” Steinberg
Marie “Tootie” Steinberg, age 95, of New Ulm, died Saturday, June 11, 2022, surrounded with the love of her family at Sleepy Eye Medical Center.
Marie is survived by daughter, Susan (Rocky) Bernard; sons, Skip (Jolene) Fluegge, Kevin (Luana) Fluegge; and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Fluegge. She leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, sister Carol Gieseke and many other relatives and friends.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; her son, Steven; and infant great-grandbabies, Gabriel, Isabel, and Noel Nerland; special friends, Don Hoffmann and Ralph Bauman; and Gizmo, her loyal cat and companion of 24 years, also preceded her to heaven.
Marie Martha Steinberg was born on July 2, 1926, to Carl and Martha (Kuck) Steinberg in New Ulm, Minnesota. After graduating from New Ulm High School, she married Norman Fluegge, and they were blessed with 5 children. Together they owned and operated Fluegge’s Skelly and Fluegge’s 66. Marie also worked at Steinberg’s Dairy, Stork Eggs during WWII, Salets, Style Stable, Herbergers, and the Glockenspiel Haus. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Marie had many hobbies and was a serious garage saler. She never met an animal she didn’t love and made sure all neighborhood pets were well fed and watered. A true sports fan, she cheered for the Minneapolis Millers and later the Vikings and Twins. The New Ulm wrestling community held a special place in her heart. Her greatest pleasures were spending time with family and following her grandchildren’s activities.
Tootie lived her last years at Divine Providence in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. She enjoyed bingo, her beautiful view of the lake, feeding the birds and tending her window flower garden. Her sense of fashion, quick wit, feisty and caring personality never changed. A wonderful mom, grandma and friend, she will be dearly missed by all who loved her.
A private celebration of Marie’s life will be held at a later date. Blessed be her memory.
