Funeral Service will be 2 pm on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church which can be found at 627 S Washington Street in New Ulm. Pastor Jeffrey Bovee will officiate, and burial will follow in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery after the service.

Visitation will be from 12-2 pm on Thursday at the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Alice is survived by her daughters, Kathy (John) Zins of Nicollet, Betty (Bruce) Schmidt of Nicollet, Linda (Ron) Strand of Rapidan; and son, Chuck (Beth) Otto of Nicollet; 11 grandchildren, Chris (Erika) Zins, Yvonne (Doug) Pilot, Shelly (Randy) Dorn, Jeff (Brian) Schmidt, Tim (Randy) Schmidt, Leonard (Stacey) Dawley, Matt (Marisol) Strand, Amy (Ryan Shock) Strand, Kim (Matt) Bode, Kristal (Jeremy) Wagner, Katie (Clark) Holz; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Melba Hopp of Lafayette; sister-in-law, Laurie Gieseke of rural New Ulm; and brother-in-law, Dave Breitung of St. Peter. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walton and Henry Gieseke; and sisters, Laura Seemann, Mary Ann Bode, Bernice Breitung, and Carol Gieseke.

Alice Marie Gieseke was born September 16, 1915 in Brighton Township-Nicollet County to Henry and Mary (Fischer) Gieseke. She was baptized at home on September 26, 1915, and confirmed on April 13, 1930 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brighton Township. Alice attended the German School by the church in Brighton Township through the 8th grade. She took piano lessons from Professor Klatt at a young age and played organ at the Brighton Church–a duty she shared with her cousin Alma. Alice also worked at the Klossner General Store and the Beehive Clothing Store in New Ulm before attending beauty school in Mankato. After her training in beauty school, Alice worked at the Rosemary Beauty Shop for one year of training, and then the Ideal Beauty Shop in New Ulm which she later purchased and ran for over eight years before selling it. Alice married Elden Otto on August 17, 1941, and they farmed in the Nicollet area. They later divorced in 1967 and she moved into New Ulm in 1969 and worked as a nurse’s aid at the Union Hospital. In her retirement, she enjoyed growing many beautiful flowers around her house and had a special touch with many indoor plants as well, especially African violets. Alice later moved to Ridgeway on German in May of 2009. Mom was an excellent seamstress and could sew just about anything. At some point, a friend gave her a pattern to make bears out of fur coats. She made over 700 of them for various people who would bring her fur coats. She also did a lot of mending for family, friends and neighbors in later years. Alice was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Although she lived a long life, she will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved her over the years. Blessed be her memory.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak Hills Living Center, or Ridgeway on German.
