Sleepy Eye rolls by GHEC in 5 innings

SLEEPY EYE – Sleepy Eye crushed Granada/Huntley/East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 14-2 in five innings on Tuesday in nonconference softball action.

The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

It was a hitting clinic by the Indians as the team totaled three triples, three doubles, two hit batters, a wild pitch and 10 walks drawn.

Paige Haala was at the forefront of the Indians’ offense, going 2 for 4 with two triples, four RBIs and three runs scored. Nora Coulson added two doubles with an RBI and a run scored. Katelyn Tauer got the win on the mound for Sleepy Eye, striking out two while allowing no hits and two walks in three innings pitched.

Sleepy Eye started off the game hot, sending 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and loading four separate times. Callie Evers reached on an infield single as the leadoff batter, then scored on Haala’s triple to right field. Haala scored on a wild pitch for Sleepy Eye’s second run of the game. Taylor Berkner reached first on a walk, then scored on Coulson’s double.

Tauer was hit by a pitch to continue the inning, then courtesy runner Megan Sellner scored when Berkner walked. Three walks led to three more runs for Sleepy Eye, then Haala’s second triple of the inning brought Berkner and Jaelynn Schauman home. Haala scored the Indians’ 10th run of the inning.

Jace Schauman drew a walk in the second inning, scoring later on a GHEC/T/ML error for an 11-0 lead for the Indians.

Coulson hit a double to left field with two outs in the bottom of the third, scoring on a Jace Schauman hit for a 12-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jaelynn Schauman hit the ball to right field for a leadoff triple. Jaelynn Schauman scored on a Berkner walk, then Haala scored on a wild pitch for a 14-0 Sleepy Eye advantage.

The Jaguars ended the Indian’s bid for a shutout when they scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Mariel Parish doubled to center field followed by a Allie Kuehl walk. Several plays later, a wild pitch scored both Parish and Kuehl.

Sleepy Eye (11-6, 7-6) will play at Minnesota Valley Lutheran (2-11, 1-10) on Thursday.
