Jonathan Schiro: New Ulm School Board
Jonathan Schiro
1. What is your background and why are you running for school board?
I have been on the New Ulm Public School Board since 2017 and am the current vice-chair. While serving on the New Ulm Public School Board, I have served on many committees, including: activities, personnel, district curriculum advisory council, insurance, building and finance.
I am married to Tonia who is a graduate of New Ulm Public Schools, and we have two adult children, who have both graduated from New Ulm Public Schools.
2.) In your opinion, what is the top issue facing District 88 Schools?
I believe there are many topics we need to continue discussing as a school board and not necessarily just one top issue. When making decisions it’s important to take a holistic approach as the decisions we make have an impact on many individuals, including students, staff and the community. A few areas we will need to continue focusing on, include: budget/funding, mental health support, achievement gaps, education for all students, and staffing.
3.) What is the board’s role in ensuring that the district serves all types of learners?
It’s the school board’s responsibility to set the vision and policies to ensure all students are served. It’s equally important the decisions the school board makes promote a student-centered approach which improves student performance.
We can always look at ways of improving; however, I do believe New Ulm Public Schools provides several different programs to promote individualized learning. Some of the programs include classes at the CTE (Career and Technical Education) Center, AP (Advanced Placement) classes and internship opportunities within the community.
4.) What role should the board take in helping recruit and retain teaching staff?
The school board assists with recruitment and retainment by setting policies that promote staff recruitment and retention. The school board should ensure we have competitive wages, support staff development and oversee a positive work environment.
5.) What is your top goal if elected to the school board?
As a school board member, I believe the decisions we make should be grounded in student success. My top goal will be to continue to ensure the decisions we make have a positive impact on the high-quality education provided by New Ulm Public Schools.
