Oak Hills Foundation Frolics to be held

May 4

NEW ULM — Save the date for the May 4, 2018 Oak Hills Memorial Foundation’s 4th Annual Frolics at the Best Western Plus. In the past, the fundraiser has raised an annual average of $9,000.00 for future grants to Oak Hills Living Center, our community’s home. This year’s Cinco de Mayo theme promises to be full of American/Mexican history, a fun social hour, a wonderful dinner, special ethnic dancers and dance music from the Blue Ringers.

The social hour, dinner and dance will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tickets will be $50 per person. $1000, $750 or $500 sponsors will receive 8, 4 or 2 complimentary tickets, respectively. Children’s author to Speak at Martin Luther College

NEW ULM — On Wednesday, April 4, at 7 pm, the public is invited to the Martin Luther College Auditorium to hear Newbery Award-winning author Avi read dramatic and humorous presentations from several of his books (70+) and discuss his career as a writer. Through the presentation, “My Name Is Avi,” this acclaimed author will discuss some frequent questions, such as, How did he make it through school? Why does he go by one name? How does he write such a wide variety of books?

This program is sponsored by Martin Luther College, New Ulm Public Library, Friends of the New Ulm Public Library, Wanda Gag House Association, Minnesota Association for Library Friends, and Southwest Minnesota Reading Council, and is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative with funding from Minnesota�s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Stations at Way of the Cross

NEW ULM — Bishop John M. LeVoir will lead the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, March 30t, at 3 p.m. at The Way of the Cross, located on 5th North Street behind the New Ulm Medical Center, weather permitting.

If inclement weather occurs, it will be held at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

United Way Free Tax Prep

NEW ULM — United Way of the Brown County Area is offering free tax preparation by IRS certified volunteer preparers in the lower level of the New Ulm Public Library. This service is by appointment only by calling 507-766-4982. Appointments are available through April 17th.

If you prefer to self-file your taxes, myfreetaxes.com is a free and safe way for anyone earning $66,000 or less to file both federal and Minnesota tax returns at absolutely no cost to you. In 2017, 80 percent of filers completed their taxes in under one hour using myfreetaxes.com.

PACER workshop in New Ulm will address Supplemental

Security Income for youth with disabilities

NEW ULM — PACER Center will offer “Supplemental Security Income (SSI): First Steps,” a free workshop for parents of youth with disabilities. The workshop will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 9 at the Best Western Plus and New Ulm Conference Center, 2101 S. Broadway St., New Ulm.

This workshop will provide basic information on applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). How SSI can help a youth meet his or her postsecondary education, training, employment, and independent living goals will be explained, including examples of receiving benefits while working or going to school.

Joani Werner, Social Security representative, will provide information at the workshop.
