Weekend Farmers’ Market kicks off

Customers gather around Platz Produce as the KNUJ Farmers' Market has its first weekend opening of the season. Vendors included a mobile coffee/energy bar, a beef truck, multiple produce stations, and an apple and honey tent which transported their goods in a short yellow school bus.

NEW ULM — KNUJ held its first weekend Farmers Market this Saturday.

The event ran from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. along German Park on German Street between 1st and 3rd North. Vendors included a mobile coffee/energy bar, a beef truck, multiple produce stations, and an apple and honey tent which transported their goods in a short yellow school bus.

The Farmers Market had several activities for both kids and adults to partake in while they shopped at the different stands. These included a free kids quilt craft for the Quiltistry event, live ukulele music by Matt Mihlbauer, and games such as bean bag toss and a trivia spinning wheel prize giveaway.

Sue Blake returned for her seventh year with A-Peeling Acres Orchard.

The farm focuses on all-natural and homegrown products revolving around honey, apples, and baked goods. The orchard transports their goods in a short yellow school bus, making them hard to miss.

German Street was shut down from 1st to 3rd Street North Saturday for the Farmers' Market. The Farmers' Market will be open every Thursday at Cash Wise from 2:30-5:30 p.m. and every Saturday along German Street from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. until October 14.

“My husband is a school bus driver,” Blake said. We had the idea that it would be stuff we need for the market in a school bus. So the opportunity presented itself and we purchased the bus.”a great way to transport all the

The Farmers Market provides Blake with the opportunity to provide fresh food and enjoy the company of customers and vendors.

“I personally enjoy being here at all the markets and meeting people,” she said. “It’s fun to see the people that are regulars coming back and chatting and catching up. I enjoy seeing the kids. I also enjoy the fact that this is healthy, local food that we have brought. It has a low carbon footprint and the community can enjoy it because fresh, local always tastes better.”

Norma Hanson has been coming to the Farmers’ Market since the very beginning. The benefit she’s seen it bring the community is providing products not easily found elsewhere.

“[I like] what it does to supply city people with fresh vegetables and stuff that they ordinarily probably wouldn’t get. Farm fresh, not grocery store fresh.” Hanson said. “[Personally] I like the canned food and the fresh food out of the gardens.”

This was the second event of the year, as the program officially kicked off Thursday at Cash Wise Foods from 2:30-5:30 p.m. The event will continue every Thursday at Cash Wise and Saturday on German Street, rain or shine, from now until October 14.
