Evaluating the News workshop to be held in Sleepy Eye

Brown County Farmers Union, Brown County NFO, and the New Ulm Public Library will present a workshop on Evaluating the News on Monday, July 25.

There is no cost and the public is invited. The two-hour seminar will begin at 7 p.m. in the Sleepy Eye Community Center, 115 2nd Avenue NW. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

In today’s world of 24/7 news coverage, advertising sponsorships, hype, and frequent retractions, how can you sift out the facts to make your own informed decisions? How do you recognize bias and opinion? How can you determine the motives of an article or publication? Join us for a no holds barred in-depth analysis of news media companies, fact checking, click bait, fake news, misinformation, and bias.

The seminar will be led by LeRoy Harris. Harris is the Programming & Technology Services at the New Ulm Public Library. He holds a Master’s in Library & Information Science from the University of Arizona and has been teaching on a variety of subjects for twenty years.

This will not be presented from a left or right, liberal or conservative vantage point. Rather, it will be an honest look at finding truth. Ultimately, that is a responsibility of all citizens if a democracy is to work well. This topic has never been more important.

Starting at $4.50/week.
