NEW ULM — Becky Schlegel and The Hepcats performed at Shirley’s Park & Country Retreat over the July 4 weekend.

Jess Havemeier, the camp coordinator at Shirley’s Park, said this was the third year the Rockin’ Hep Cats have performed at the park.

“They always bring an energetic, crowd-pleasing show, Havemeier said. “Our campers ask us to bring them back every year because everyone enjoys their fun mix of ’50s and ’60s favorites.”

Adding Becky Schlegel made the weekend even more special.

“She brings a wonderful blend of folk and country music,” Havemeier said. “After spending much of her career in Nashville and touring throughout the Midwest, we’re excited to welcome such outstanding talent from both acts to Shirley’s Park.”

The connection is especially meaningful because Todd Owen, the bandleader of the Hep Cats, is the grandson of the property’s former owner.

“Todd spent time growing up here, so it’s always a special experience to welcome him back to perform where he has so many memories,” Havemeier said.

Schlegel performed in a “round robin” style set with the Hep Cats because she didn’t have her full band with her.

She did a little set in the middle, with the Hep Cats playing before and after her.

The Hep Cats delivered their signature mix of ’50s and ’60s rockabilly and country favorites, including songs like Marty Stuart’s “Tempted” and classics such as “Blue Suede Shoes.” Schlegel brought her folk-country style with heartfelt originals and covers, including her take on Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee.”

Both acts put on family-friendly shows that appeal to audiences of all ages.

“Their music creates a fun, welcoming atmosphere, and many of our guests return year after year to see them perform at the park,” Havemeier said.

The park was packed with campers, many staying the weekend in seasonal spots.

One visitor, Justin Walters from New Ulm, was enjoying his seasonal camper and brought his own 4th of July decorated golf cart to get around the grounds.

“This is mine. I have a seasonal spot here,” he said.

Schlegel spoke about balancing her creative life.

“Life has been good to me. I’m trying to find time to enjoy music as well as balancing the creative world of painting. I’m also the lucky mom of three amazing sons,” she said.

Looking ahead, Schlegel is excited about new projects this summer, including recording with the bluegrass group “Clover and The Bee” and singing more duets.

“I am playing more than ever this summer in a few different configurations,” she said.

After the Shirley’s Park shows, her plans include showcasing new music at the Folk Alliance Region Midwest (FARM) conference in October, a trip to Kansas City, and returning to The Douglas Saloon in November and December.

“I always look forward to playing music there, it feels like home,” she said.

The weekend performances at Shirley’s Park were part of the venue’s summer music series.

Upcoming events include Comedy Night on July 25, Kids Day on Aug. 8 (supported by the New Ulm Optimists Club), and Kayla Daniels on Labor Day, Sept. 5.

Starting at $4.65/week.
