School Board member defends district after sex ed comments

NEW ULM–Roger Bauer returned to the District 88 School Board to speak out against LGBTQ education being part of sex education.

Bauer believed that teaching LGBTQ issues would turn students homosexual or transgender.

He said, “If you guys keep pushing this sex education in this school district you’re going to put all of these young kids listening to their teachers and thinking their telling the truth, they’re going to end up being that way.”

Bauer then gave his definition of gay, saying, “That’s a guy going after another guy because he seems to like them better than girls. Next thing you know they are playing with each other’s genitals. Next thing you know they are having intercourse with each other.”

Bauer called this form of sex education shameful and called for more transparency in what is being taught in sex education. He wanted policy to be changed that required parents to request sex education be taught rather than forcing parents to opt out.

Bauer was also angry the board did not start the meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. He used the remainder of his time to recite the Pledge of Allience.

Bauer last spoke during a November school board meeting, warning the board against accepting money from the federal government for special programming, before pivoting into 9/11 conspiracy theories.

Bauer’s remark came during the public comment section of the board meeting. Typically, following public comments, the board does not respond, but board member Jonathan Schiro felt compelled to make a comment praising the school.

“Both my kids graduated from this school, and as a parent with kids going through the school, I’ve appreciated what the schools have provided the parents regarding sex education,” Schiro said.

He believed the school provided options related to sex education.

“I as a parent appreciated the communication the school provided,” he said. “I wanted to say that for all school officials.”
