Junique Center asking for apartment permit

Staff photo by Clay Schuldt A permit request allowing an apartment unit at the Junique Center will come before the New Ulm Planning Commission. The former church is currently used for weddings and celebrations of life, including baptisms and anniversaries. Though located in a business district, residential use is allowed with a permit.

NEW ULM — A special meeting of the New Ulm Planning Commission will be held Thursday.

The November meeting of the planning commission was moved from the fourth Thursday because of the Thanksgiving holiday to the first Thursday in December.

The commission will consider a permit request to allow a residential dwelling unit in the Junique Center at 125 S. Broadway.

The building is a former church. The upper level is used for weddings and celebrations of life, including baptisms and anniversaries. The lower level is used as reception space for these events.

The request to allow a residential unit came from owner Kathleen Backer. She is proposing converting the lower level dining room into a single one-bedroom apartment unit. The upper level would continue to be used for weddings and other celebrations.

The city code was amended in 2019 to allow apartments in a downtown business districts through a conditional use permit. The property is located on a block with 12 other apartment units.

City staff is recommending approval of the request as it complies with the necessary criteria for the permit and an apartment would be compatible with other residential and business land uses in the area.
