Sleepy Eye’s offense shines in rain-shortened game

MANKATO — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion put up 13 runs in the first inning and held a 19-run lead over Mankato American VFW before the game was rained out on Wednesday.

The game was called in the top of the fifth inning, but Sleepy Eye held a 20-1 advantage in the game that will not be counted towards the final records.

Adam Braulik started the game on the mound, pitching two innings and allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout. Jaxon Sanez pitched the other two innings, striking out two and allowing no hits and no walks. At the plate, Saenz was 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and five RBIs, while Keeyan Netzke was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Derek Wales and Merrick Mathiowetz each had two hits and an RBI.

Sleepy Eye sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning, collecting seven hits in its 13-run inning. Wales had an RBI double during the inning, while Saenz drove home two runs with a double to make it a 13-0 game.

Mankato was able to score a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Sleepy Eye put up four runs in the top of the second, with Netzke’s single plating two runs. Post 7 didn’t score in the third, but added three runs in the fourth, with Saenz tripling for two more RBIs then scoring on a wild pitch. Saenz retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth before the rain interrupted the game.

Sleepy Eye plays at Marshall on Tuesday.
