‘Marking Time’ book available at BCHS Museum
“Marking Time,” a book published by the Brown County Historical Society, is a guide to over 120 historical markers placed in Brown County. The BCHS erected 25 of the historic markers found in Brown County. The book can be purchased in the BCHS Museum Store.
“Marking Time – An Illustrated Guide to Brown County’s Site of Historical Interest” helps promote tourism in Brown County and create fact finding routes for tourists to explore the history of the area. The markers memorialize landmarks like Lake Hanska and the Waraju Distillery; towns like Comfrey, Evan and Golden Gate; people like Chief Sleepy Eyes and events like the 1862 Leavenworth Rescue Expedition.
The BCHS has a long-standing marker program starting with the erection of the Brown County Territorial Marker on the Courthouse lawn in 1949 to its most recent marker dedicated in 2019 for the ghost town of Dotson. The marker program reflects the BCHS commitment to reach out to all areas of the county and recognize the historical landmarks, people and events that reflect the rich history of Brown County.
In addition to the BCHS marker program, markers are placed by individuals, families, businesses, organizations like the Junior Pioneers & the German-Bohemian Heritage Society and towns and cities in Brown County.
