Brothers hold joint exhibit

The "Desolate Ways" exhibit will feature the photography of Matt Johnson. The photos in the exhibit features abandoned or lost places depicted in start black and white.

NEW ULM — The Grand Center for Arts & Culture is opening a new exhibit Saturday from brothers Matt and Carter Johnson.

The Johnson brothers are from the Judson township and their new exhibit is called Desolate Ways. The exhibit will combine Matt’s photography and Carter’s wood and sculpture work.

This is the second time the Johnson brothers have worked together on an exhibit. The two previously created an installation for The Grand’s Smallest Museum and back at the grand to exhibit in the 4 Pillars Gallery.

Matt said they are trying to choose pieces that complement each other’s work. Around eight of the pieces tie together.

Matt and Carter decided to call the show “Desolate Ways” because even though they work in different mediums, there is an abandoned quality to their work.

Matt said he likes to photography empty places. He has a passion for finding abandoned sites. A couple of his photographs show buildings that have since been demolished.

Carter’s sculpture features simple wood creation but also uses bone in his work. One of the pieces in the work will be an animal skull draped in fabric. The piece will be located along with a black and white photo of a skull taken by Matt.

The gallery exhibit will run from Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 31. The show will also feature the music of Jason Helder from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Desolate Ways will remain on display through August 27 in the 4 Pillars Gallery.
