GFW board to make election result official

WINTHROP — The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) school board will canvass its election on Monday, Aug. 17 in the junior/senior high auditorium.

Other agenda items are:

• A back to school plan presentation and 2020-2021 base learning model proposal by GFW cabinet members.

Elementary Principal Jennifer Thompson reports the most recent survey shows 78% of families plan to send their children back to school, 6% will use the district’s distance learning plan and 15% are undecided. Thompson said undecided families and those who did not take the survey will be called to see if they have questions. She said 235 families responded to the survey so far.

Thompson said all classroom desks will be placed facing one direction, students will access lockers in shifts and classroom libraries will be placed in hallways if needed. Students will have 50 minutes of combined recess/physical education daily.

• Facility Manager Dave Sellner said roof maintenance projects at Gibbon and Winthrop will be done in August including a bus shed roofing project.

• Consent agenda hires include junior/senior high school principal Brittany Galetka, $90,000; junior high school volleyball coach Andrew Wortz, full-time teacher Winter Fischer and bus driver Julie Fischer; elementary head cook Denise Schaefer’s resignation and certified leaves for fulltime teachers Lacee Johnson, Aug. 28-Oct. 18, 2020 and Kevin Johnson, Oct. 19-Nov. 22, 2020; and elementary paraprofessional Gwen Ruff, classified leave without pay Aug. 27, 2020-Aug. 26, 2021.

• Donations include Jeff and Tammy Rose, $1,250; $750 for GFW football; $750 for elementary education and the Winthrop Honor Guard, $1,000 for elementary school books.

• The board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Winthrop auditorium. It will be live streamed on Facebook.
