Bricks rain on street

NEW ULM — Dozens of bricks crashed onto the Minnesota Street sidewalk Wednesday evening after dislodging from the parapet of a three story apartment building on the corner of 1st South and Minnesota.

The incident occurred sometimes before 6:30 p.m. The bricks landed a few feet from two public benches and table. No injuries resulted from the falling bricks. Caution tape was placed around the entire building corner.

The exact cause of the incident is unknown.

New Ulm Building Inspector Ellwood Zabel said before this incident, the city had contacted the building owner about fixing a section of bowed wall on the structure’s south face, but it cannot be confirmed if this recent damage was related.

Zabel did confirm similar damage had occurred on this building before. The parapet on the 1st Street side of the building had broken off and was repaired.
