Convention of States town hall in NU Saturday
NEW ULM — A town hall meeting hosted by the Convention of States (COS) project begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 7 at the New Ulm Community Center, 600 N. German St.
Local citizens who support the COS project are invited along with area state legislators to discuss current events, ideas and potential remedies.
The COS petition asks state legislators nationwide to vote in favor of the resolution limiting federal government power and jurisdiction.
The nationwide grassroots organization founded in 2013, seeks to call a convention of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials including members of Congress and federal judges including the Supreme Court.
Organized in all 50 states with more than 4 million volunteers, advocates and supporters, the organization seeks to stop unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. from making sweeping decisions that affect millions of Americans.
The U.S. Constitution gives states the power to call a Convention of States to propose amendments. It requires 34 states to call the convention and 38 to ratify any proposed amendments.
Fifteen states have passed identical Article 5 resolutions (amendments) including Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Indiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arizona, North Dakota, Texas, Mississippi, Missouri and Utah.
Nineteen more states are needed to trigger a national convention.
