Gaylord mayor gets probation

GAYLORD — Mayor Don Boeder was sentenced to two years of supervised probation after making an Alford plea to a gross misdemeanor charge of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult in Sibley County District Court Oct. 10.

Boeder was sentenced to 30 days community service at a location of his choice, subject to probation approval. He was ordered to pay $85 in court surcharges and fees and did not receive any jail time.

Boeder, 61, was originally charged with a felony. The charge was amended as part of the Alford plea agreement that read “there is a substantial likelihood that I will be found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt that on July 1, 2016 to April 23, 2018 in Sibley County, I temporarily deprived a vulnerable adult of his financial resources for another’s benefit. The value of the property was more than $500 but not more than $1,000.”

Boeder will receive a stay of imposition. His conviction would be reduced to a misdemeanor when he is discharged from probation. He must remain law abiding and have no same or similar offenses.

Boeder was charged in March after his stepfather said he believed his stepson, also his former power-of-attorney (POA), took thousands of dollars from him from 2016 to 2018 without permission. Boeder later returned $19,747.30 to his stepfather, after he was questioned about the money by a POA that succeeded him and by investigators, according to court documents.

Gaylord City Council President Tom Homme said the city council will not take any action against Boeder in regards to the court case.
