Minnesota River forecast to top 808 ft. in NU by Tuesday

NEW ULM — The National Weather Service (NWS) Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service forecasted the Minnesota River at New Ulm to reach 808.5 feet on Tuesday, April 2.

The river was observed at 806.39 feet at 4:45 a.m. Saturday in New Ulm. Flood stage is 800 feet. The record high river level in New Ulm is 811 feet set on April 9, 1997.

The Minnesota River near Morton was observed at 28.48 feet at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The river was forecast to reach 29.3 feet by Sunday morning and remain there for several days. The current high water level of 29.2 feet was set April 15, 2001. Flood stage is 21 feet.

The Redwood River at Redwood Falls was observed at 10.6 feet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and is expected to keep falling. The river was observed at 17.82 feet on Sunday, March 24, topping the prior record of 15.9 feet, set June 18, 1957.

Forecasts are based on continuing snowmelt. Ice jams may cause flooding on a more localized basis. No significant precipitation is expected for the new few days.

Flood warnings continue for the Cottonwood River at New Ulm, Minnesota River at Morton, New Ulm, Mankato, Henderson, Jordan and Savage and the Redwood River at Redwood Falls.

The NWS advised motorists not to drive vehicles in flooded areas.

The public was advised to stay tuned to NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) Weather Radio and/or local radio and TV stations for the latest flooding information.
